Unable to ftp with Internet Security 2009

Like the title says, I can't ftp. It is not the ftp software or the configuration of the ftp software.

If I disable Internet Security I'm able to ftp just fine.

How do I modify the rules or allow for ftp access?

Hi beerbuilder,

Which program are you using for ftp?

Open the main Norton interface, go to Internet Settings > Smart Firewall > Program Control > Configure.

In the Program Control window, scroll down to the program in question and check that it is set for "Auto" or "Allow".

If it is already set for "Auto", try changing it to "Allow". Hit "Apply" and OK your way out.

Let us know if that works for you.

I'm using Filezilla for ftp.

It was set to "auto", and I changed it to "allow". Still no luck though.

Hi beerbuilder,

It's been a while since I used Filezilla. I am currently only performing ftp through Dreamweaver with no problems.

Unfortunately, I'm not at home right now to check Filezilla, but perhaps someone else will jump in with a suggestion in the mean time. It will be a few hours before I can check it.

Hi Beerbuilder,

Remove the entry for Filezilla from the list of Program Rules. Then try to access ftp using Filezilla. If you are prompted to allow the connection, select Allow always. If the problem persists, go to General Rules in Advanced settings. Check through the list of rules and make sure that ftp access is not blocked in any of them(Port no: 20 & 21). In meantime, Phil_D may get you some input.

No luck still. I check through the rules; none blocking ports 20 or 21

Thanks for trying, Beerbuilder.

You can now try to create a general rule in Smart Firewall to open the particular port and then check the connectivity .

1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
3. Under Smart Firewall, click Configure next to Advanced Settings.
4. Under Advanced Settings, click Configure next to General Rules.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Add Rule wizard, select Allow, and then click Next.
7. Select Connections to and from other computers, and then click Next.
8. Select Any Computer and then click Next.

9. Select Only communications that match all types and ports listed below, and then click Add.

10. Select Known ports from the list, check the port numbers 20 & 21 listed there and click OK.

11. Click Next.
12. If you want the logs for this rule to be saved, check Create an event log entry, and then click Next.
13. In the "What do you want to call this rule?" box, type a name for the rule, and then click Next.
14. Click Finish
15. Click Move Up to move the rule to top, and make it a higher priority.

16. Click OK, and again click OK.

17. Click OK.

Let us know the results.

Odd, thought that would work, but still no luck.

Have you tried the firewall Reset? You can find that settings in Advanced SEttings for Smart Firewall. If the issue is due to firewall in NIS 2009, this should work. If this is not working, disable only Intrusion Prevention from NIS 2009 and check.

None of those worked either.

Can you make it more clear how you disabled the Norton Internet Security so that you were able to access the ftp?

Also, go to History and check the entries where any reference to FTP is shown as blocked. If foudn, double-click on that entry and check whether you get the option to Ignore/Exclude that.

Have you tried using IE7 or later?

I've been told elsewhere here that it has FTP handling built in and I have no problem downloading Norton Removal Tool from the Symantec ftp site using it with NIS 2009 in its default settings.

How I disabled it for ftp to work was to Right Click the Norton Internet Security icon in the system tray and selected "Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect". I do this and can ftp with no problem.

As for the History, I do not see any blocking of ftp. It shows the auto creation of rules for Filezilla, the detection of it accessing the internet, and also the permission of the rule I created.

Try to add it as an detection exclusion? Auto-protect might interfere with FileZilla?

Hi beerbuilder,

Using a much older version of Filezilla (2.2.29) I was able to upload and download a simple HTML document via ftp.

What type of files are you trying to upload or download?

I was going to move a php file. But I never got to that point because I couldn’t connect. I uninstalled & reinstalled filezilla thinking that might fix this issue, but no luck. Guess I’ll keep testing.

Well, your php file wouldn't really be much different than my HTML file, but I understand that you cannot even make a connection.

Do you have any other security software installed beside Norton?

Nope, just Norton.

Hi beerbuilder,

Salihb may be on the right track to make an exclsuion for Filezilla.

See this link.

No luck with the exclusions either. Contemplating reinstalling Internet Security.
