Unable to get Java update

I post this on here for 2 reasons

1. Does this become a security issue

2. The recent ADOBE problem and the suggestion to disable java script

I'm not that well versed in these areas so my question may be stupid.

I had a pop up message from Java that indicated an update was ready to install (my program checks like 1 time per month).

I clicked ok but then got a failure message

Did anyone else get a prompt for a JAVA update? Did anyone lese have a failure to update?

Are Java updates necessary for the security of one's system?

thanks. Actually I wonder if it is because I'm logged on as user with limited privledges? I use to be able to log on that way and if I needed to do something that only the admin could do, I could input the admin password. But that doesn't seem to allow me the privledge in all cases. I noticed that when I tried to update real player and when my wife tried to download games. I wonder if there was a norton improvement that keeps this trechnique from working? I have windows Vista set with user account control, but only NAV2008.

I didn't think NAV2008 would have such function?

Try signing on to an admin account and see what happens.  This Live Update is an entirely different entity than previous ones.

Good luck.

The best way to keep safe is always be up to date with java. All apps by the way. If not updated malware is mostly able to find wholes

I logged on as admin and was able to successfully run the Java update

I now have Java 6 Update 12  (version 6.0.120) which I assume is the lates

Yep, well done. A fully patched machine is your first line of defense

Remember to mark the solution so that other visitors will know that the thread has a solution to the initial problem and where it is.

I was going to, but I had one more follow up question

How long ago did you notice this change as to only being able to download or upgrade some products logged on only as admin?

M wife use to be able to download games as limited user as long as she put in the admin password. But about 2 months ago, she was no longer able to do so

I never really noticed this since Vista is only on my son’s machine, which I maintain through my log on full admin account.
