Unable to install an update.. Please Help!

LiveUpdate was unable to download the latest virus definitions (Error 8920,212)... I followed the instructions detailed in from "tech support" and downloaded the file to my desktop.  I opened the file and ran it.  The status indicated it was successful, but my Norton system still says my definitions are outdated.

Please help.

Make sure that system date and time is correct. if it is incorrect, please correct it and then run LiveUpdate.

I did reboot the system... the definitions were still not updated.

Just checked... the date and time are correct.

Hello razorhawk.

1. Start the Norton product

2. Turn off Norton product tamper protection
3. Navigate the following location c:\programdata\Norton\Guid\product version\lue\download
4. Delete the contents of the download folder
5. Clear the temp files.
6. Run LiveUpdate.

7. Enable Norton product tamper protection and restart the computer.

Thank you for the information.

The next thing we can check is the presence of another antivirus or Firewall product. Most of the time these products cause this issue. So if you have, please remove them.

If you do not have any other security products, then delete the LiveUpdate download files, and then run LiveUpdate. Here is how you can do that:

1.Start the Norton product
2.Turn off Norton product tamper protection
3.Navigate the following location c:\programdata\Norton\Guid\product version\lue\download
4.Delete the contents of the download folder
5.Run LiveUpdate.

6.Turn on Norton Product Tamper protection.

Do you have any proxy settins to connect to the Internet?

I've searched and haven't been able to locate:

c:\programdata\Norton\Guid\product version\lue\download

If you have Windows XP, then you need to check here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\Guid\product version\lue\download

Sorry.. I do have XP.

Getting closer... this is as far as I go:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton

There is no option for Guid\product version\lue\download

Guid is a folder name which has a combination of numbers and characters. it is the first folder inside the Norton folder.

Product Version is the version of your Norton product. It may be NIS_18.6.0.29 or NAV_18.6.0.29 depending on your Norton product.

For example, this is the path in my computer:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_18.6.0.29\Lue\Downloads

Found it.. I was able to delete the contents of the download folder and run the LiveUpdate with the same results.  The Norton 2011 Virus Definitions failed to complete.

:(

Actually... I just checked the lue\download folder again and the files are still there.  They are compressed in 22 folders.

Okay.

Do you have any other antivirus or firewall products installed in your computer?

Do you use any proxy settings to connect to the Internet? If not, please check this:

1. Start your Norton 2011 product.

2 Click Settings.

3 Click Miscellaneous Settings.

4 Next to Network Proxy Settings, click Configure.

5 Make sure that nothing is selected under Proxy settings or Authentication.

That's fine. They get downloaded when you run LiveUpdate.

We do have proxy settings for my computer to connect to the internet.

Alright, then go to the Network Proxy settings window in the Norton product, and see whether the proxy settings are correctly added.

The network proxy settings are correct in the Norton settings.

Do you have any other antivirus or firewall products installed? This is really important, as other security products can block the updates.

I am a bit confused here. What is the Norton product you have? Is this Norton 360 or Norton 2011 product?

If you do not have any other security product, please download and run the Norton Removal Tool, and then reinstall the Norton product. You can download the Norton Removal Tool, depending on your Norton product and version from:

http://www.symantec.com/symnrt

After you run the Norton Removal Tool and restart the computer, you will receive the instruction to download your Norton product. Download it, install it, and then run LiveUpdate.

Norton 360
