Unable to install Norton 2012

I recently paid for Norton 2012 to upgrade from an earlier version.

Once I reached the original expiry date, Norton now tells me that it (the earlier version) has expired and that I am unprotected.

My Norton Account tells me that I have "Sep 7, 2011 Norton™ Internet Security 2010 ", in the Order History Section, but only shows the expired version under the products tab.  And although eventually I downloaded the new version yesterday (it took 31 minutes over a broadband connection, so must have been downloading something) and restarted the computer at which time everything seemed to be working OK, when I switched on today it again told me I was unprotected.

I have now spent TWO HOURS going round in loops (at one point Norton had automatically opened 8 windows in Firefox) trying to resolve this issue.  The automated system (Nathan) is very poor for non-straightforward queries.  When I tried to find a phone number to speak to a real person, I typed in my problem carefully, only to see a US Free phone number 1-800- flash on the screen and then disappear (I live in England, so that's no help either).  And although I entered my phone number, no one has had the courtesy to call back either.  I keep resetting the country from United States to UK, but this doesn't stick.  And when I followed the link to one of the support pages I got an Error 404 - page not found.

I downloaded the AutoDetectPkg and it told me that I had got Norton 2012 installed and didn't need to download anything else.  So what is going on?

I am sorry, but I am at my wits end on this, and at one point was almost in tears - and I write this an experienced PC user, who has been using IBM compatible PCs ever since the days of MS-Dos in the 1980s.  The overall customer experience I have received is exceptionally poor.

Sorry about the rant, needed to get it off my chest - I am still left with the problem of an unprotected computer and no obvious way of fixing it.

Any help would be welcome.
