Unable to load norton Security software

I purchased a copy of Norton Internet Security (3 installations and have only used one on my mini Samsung computer. I don't know where I went wrong this morning, but I had the question being asked of me if I wanted to update my nortons program, which I believe has expired or was about to. The system instructed me to delete my old nortons program, which I did, but I wasn't quite sure that thay was what I needed to do, so disconnected the computer from the internet in an effort to stop the process going ahead. Since then, I have been unable to install the disc to my Laptop, which is a Toshiba. Can you please advise me how I can install this software to protect my computer from outside influences. I am reluctant to use it until I have this coverage. Thank you,Dong1

Hi Dong1:

Welcome to the Norton community.

Could you please let us know what version of NIS you would like to install on your PC (e.g., NIS 2011, NIS 2012) and your Windows OS?  I still have NIS 2011 on my PC just because the new release of NIS 2012 still sounds like it has a few bugs that need to be fixed, but lots of people are using NIS 2012 on their systems with no problem.

In the mean time, could you also log in to your Norton Account here and let us know the expiration date for your current NIS subscription?  While you're loggged into your Norton Account, you should also write down the product activation key for your Norton product (but don't post this product key in the forum) since you'll likely need it when we provide instructions on how to re-install NIS.

Are you saying the disc drive no longer works?

Hi Dong1;

I'll go ahead and post instructions on how to perform a clean re-install of NIS using the Norton Removal Tool.  Papauz has posted excellent step-by-step instructions here for NIS 2011 that can be easily adapted for any version of NIS.  Essentially you'll need:

  1. The Norton Removal Tool from www.norton.com/nrt/.  For most NIS installations you would select the tool for I have a Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011/2012 product.
  2. The latest available Norton Internet Security installation file (NIS 2011 from www.norton.com/nis11/; NIS 2012 from www.norton.com/nis12/)
  3. Your product activation key, available from your Norton Account at www.mynortonaccount.com.

After Step 8 of PapauZ's instructions (i.e., before performing your first LiveUpdate for your re-installed NIS), I would advise that you disable automatic NIS upgrades (Settings | Miscellaneous Settings | Automatic Download of New Versions | OFF).  This will prevent future upgrades of NIS (e.g., from NIS 2011 to NIS 2012) but will not prevent LiveUpdate from delivering necessary product updates within the same version (e.g., from NIS 2011 v. 18.5 to v. 18.6).  Major upgrades, if available, can be performed at any time from Support | New Version Check as long as you have a valid subscription.

If you use Idenity Safe to manage logins and personal data on the web and your current NIS installation is seriously damaged you may have problems creating a manual backup of your Identity Safe data in Step 1 of Papauz's instructions.  The Norton Removal Tool should prompt you to save your Identity Safe data, but it's best if you try to create a manual back up your data before running the Norton Removal Tool just to be safe.

You  may even find that you have problems uninstalling your current NIS installation from the Windows Control Panel in Step 5.  Just do the best you can - in your case, the most important steps involve running the Norton Removal Tool at least 2 or 3 times (with re-boots in between each clean) to ensure that you achieve the best possible removal of your corrupted NIS installation.

Also note that the Norton Removal Tool removes all Norton products from your computer, so keep this in mind if you have Norton Utilities, Norton Ghost or other Symantec products installed on your PC.
