Unable to scan folders without Norton Internet Security 2009 locking up on Windows XP computer

I am unable to scan folders without Internet Security 2009 locking up on my XP desktop.  I can scan files and do full and quick scans.  I click on Custom Scan and select a folder.  The scan never starts and the program locks up.  I am unable to do anything further and usually am unable to use Task Manager to shut NIS down.  I usually end up restarting the computer.  This happened with a downloaded trial edition and after being installed with a CD I just purchased.  NIS runs fine on my Vista laptop, including scans on folders.  I have tried online chat twice with support personnel and followed their suggestions and let them try to fix my computer using remote assistance.  Their last suggestion was to completely remove the program (downloaded trial version) using a removal tool and installing NIS using the CD version.  I still am unable to scan folders but am able to scan anything else.  The rest of the program works fine.  I just would like to be able to scan folders without NIS locking up my computer.  I am running XP with service pack 3.  The initial full scan on the computer showed and removed a worm called W32 spybot worm that Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 didn’t catch (I ran a complete scan with Trend Micro which showed no problems before uninstalling it and installing NIS).  Subsequent scans with NIS show no problems.  Any help would be appreciated.
