OK, thanks. Have you tried what Andmike suggested earlier--running LiveUpdate and rebooting until you get the message saying you now have all the most current updates--and then trying the Autofix under Support-->Get Support?
That's the only other thing I can think of, besides waiting for the problem to clear on its own. It is also remotely possible that the online backup just isn't compatible with such an old configuration anymore--although I'd consider that unlikely.
Yes, actually I tried what Andmike suggested before I did the uninstall/reinstall and then I did it again after the reinstall.
I'm beginning to wonder if you may be right about there being a problem with online backup using XP because the other two PCs both use Windows 7 and there was no problem with them. All PCs are hooked up to the same Internet via a router.
The thing is, XP has proven extremely resilient; there are a lot of folks out there still using it. So it doesn't quite pass what a former CO used to refer to as "the giggle test" to assume that there are no other Norton 360 users out there successfully backing up to the cloud on 7-year-old machines running XP.
If you're really about ready to retire this machine anyhow, and don't feel like it's worth mnore of your time, we can certainly drop it. But if you'd like, I can escalate the issue within Guru circles and Symantec and see if we can get somebody with more technical insights about what may be going on.
If it's at all possible to to find what that solution is I think I would like to find out. I'm curious if other XP users have seen this happen and don't know how to go about correcting it.
If the investigation seems to be getting too involved then I guess we can reconsider; for now I'd like to continue the investigation.
If this or any other security products that monitor your computer in real time are installed along with Norton, it can result in no end of problems, and in the above thread produces the same Norton Account issue (albeit under different circumstances). If you do have anything like that in play, let me know and we'll try cleaning that out (with its specialized removal tool) and doing another remove-and-reinstall of Norton.
It's a little ambiguous what the user did here. I can think of two possibilities, which I'd try in this order:
With the 360 main screen/menu in front of you as depicted, log out of your Norton Account (not exit the menu). Then, with the menu still in front of you, go back through the steps Andmike and I were walking you through to activate your online backup space;
If that doesn't work, then with the menu in front of you, log out of your Norton Account as described above. Then log back in and go back through the steps to activate your online backup.
I think the user is saying #1--because logging your 360 out from its associated Norton Account should not affect its operations on your computer, and I think the point the user is making is that forcing the system to log in to your Norton account while it is trying to activate your backup somehow keeps the tasks lashed together properly inside the program. But it's also possible that the point is just the Norton Account equivalent of a reboot.
Keep us posted; it would help us to know which (if either) of these works for you, in case this problem crops up again.
I checked for the IObit program and don't have it. Whether I have other programs causing a problem I really don't know.
I may not be doing the right steps you're suggesting so bear with me. When you say log in or out of my account, the only one I can think you mean is the on-line Norton Mangament account. That's where I logged in and out when you said 'log out of your Norton Account.'
If that's wrong please let me know.
If it's correct, then the steps you suggested didn't work, as far as the online storage problem is concerned.
Yeah, stand by--I'll need to get to a machine with Norton 360 on it to walk you through the steps in more detail. I'm on an Android system at the moment, so the instructions I gave are the best I can do from memory.
Perhaps if @peterweb is around, he can do this quicker, since he was involved in the thread I referenced and recognized the solution as one that will fix a world of ills....
While DistEd2 is looking for an N360 system, may I ask does your N360 main screen show you as signed in or not?
If you are signed in you should see a screen like this (with the email address you use with Norton where the black smudge is..
or are you signed out in which case you should see...
If you are signed in, click on the email address shown and "sign out" then sign back in. If you are not signed in then sign in.
By the way you say that you now have the green tick on the backup that should be because Norton knows that you have done a backup recently. It does not care where you have done it, whether on line or to a local backup. If it is not done for around 2 weeks then it goes red again to prompt you.
Andmike has provided the specific instructions I needed a Norton 360 installation at hand to give (with pictures no less!)
Again, after you've signed out, but with the Norton 360 menu still up, it'll be time to go through the steps that Andmike provided earlier in this thread (under Backup-->Manage Backup Sets), to activate your Secure Online Storage.
Let us know if that finally gets this fixed for you. If not, I've found another thread with a somewhat more obtuse method (via Norton Management) that may be worth trying....
LMAO!! Believe me, I completely understand! I'm almost as excited to see this resolved as you are
And you're quite welcome--it's what we come here to do.
Looking at the last few posts, I'd say mark Andmike's final post as the Solution. That bit about logging out without leaving the Norton 360 main screen turned out to be the easiest part to get confused on, so his illustrations were pretty central. And then future users clicking on "Go to Solution" will be taken there, can follow his instructions...and then will see mine containing the rest of the steps necessary right below.
