If the update you are referring to is not the SP3 update, please try running the tool from the following document.

I recently downloaded some upgrades to my windows Xp and on rebooting I noticed Norton IS did not start as normal as well did not place itself in its usual place at the botton right corner of the screen.
I thought Norton had been turned off, tried to restart it from the Programs list and it would not start at all. I tried turning Windows firewall off and this didn't help as well. It seem that Norton will not start at all and now concerned about the security of my system. Is there a solution to this problem?
What Version of Windows is installed on your P.C. and what Service Pack is installed?
Do you get any Error Messages? Check in your Activity Log, which can be found in the N.I.S. tab, under the sub-heading, Reports and Statistics.
I don’t think he will be able to check the activity logs as he is not able to start the product.Have you tried running the tool?
samjudge75,
What Upgrades to your Windows XP? Service Pack 3 by any chance?
If so, check This Post about SP3.
