Unauthorized access to personal email accounts

I recently found out that our IT department at work regularly reads employees' company emails.  I am very careful to not check my personal hotmail account from my work laptop as I don't know if they could thereby access my hotmail emails as well.

A few weeks ago however, I had to check my hotmail account from work as I needed access to an attachment.  Of course I had to enter my password.

My questions are:

- if they wanted to, could they have seen or deciphered the password that I entered and be reading my hotmail emails as well?

- how would I know, are there any signs that would tell me if they were doing so?

- would Norton be able to tell if this was happening? or would they be able to block it?

Thanks
