Understanding protection

First, this is a great site. Some co-workers told me about it after I had soem problems with the on-line tech support

yes I'm a dinasour I still use Norton Antivirus 2008 ( Yes, I know I can update, but my subscription is coming due and I really like things the way they are ) From browsing the forum, I think I may be one of the few still with 2008. But no problem, I like it.

I have a theorethical question for the forum.

I know that we all need a firewall and I'm not suggesting not to. But in theory, if you have a good antivirus/antispyware like Norton but you did not use a firewall- The antivirus such as the 2008 version ( and I know it has a firewall like component) even if threats get to your computer ( obviously without a firewall) would the functions of the antivirus/antispyware block those that are known and those that are in the definition/protection  files, including worms, spyware, rootkits, key loggers, and other ways that the creeps can take over your OS?

Again, not advocating the non-use of a firewall, but more so wanting to illustrate ot have it illustrated how protective the Norton antivirus 2008 can be.
