Underwater Cables Severed; Internet and Telephone Service in Middle East and Asia is Impacted

Where's James Bond when we need him? This past Wednesday two of the underwater cables that serve business and consumers in the Middle East and Asian markets were severed. People in countries like Egypt and India are experiencing what must feel like a return to the dark ages of Internet living, back to the speeds of dial-up connections or no service at all!

And today, yet another cable has been cut, in the murky waters of the Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of Egypt. Is this terrorism? Authorities have sent ships out to investigate and expect that the first two cables will be repaired and back online in 10 days or so. They suspect nothing more sinister to explain the broken cables than damage from ships' anchors.

I'm trying not to be cynical about this but shipping in the Mediterranean is nothing new. Ships have been using anchors for thousands of years and don't normally drag them upon the sea floor as they move about. And for three such important cables to be cut and rendered inoperable within a few days feels just a wee bit suspicious.

Besides, I'd just like to see Daniel Craig (or Pierce Brosnan) in a wetsuit going out there to investigate. In the interest of the global internet user, of course!! Shall we start a petition?
