Unknown Malware prevents internet connection and pops up fake N360 window

Hi there

I am posting on behalf of a friend who is having issues with his computer.

He is unable to connect to the internet for some reason and thinks malware has gotten into his computer and changed his internet settings. He thinks it is malware as his Norton reports blocking connection to the internet due to a threat. However, when Norton 360 (the version he uses) scans for viruses etc. it finds nothing. What is also strange is when the scan window starts the Norton 360 icon in the corner is very pixelated compared to the first window (and compared to the same window on my own version of Norton 360 it is definately different,)

Furthermore, when scanning with anti Malware software it would find a threat in the Norton 360 folder and then crash before the scan could complete.

If anyone has heard of anything like this or can provide any info it would be much appreciated

Kind regards

Craig

Hello craig5792

Welcome to the Norton Forums

Can you please tell us the version of N360 that your friend is using? Also what operating system and service pack level? Thanks

Try Norton Power Eraser tool mentioned in this page:

Run the scan in Normal mode, do not use Aggressive Mode. Check whether the scans detect any threats and let us know the results.

No Internet = Useless Norton Power Eraser, as I have previously stated,  NPE won't scan unless it is able to have an internet connection.
