Unrealtournament.exe slow w/ Norton

Hi,

my nephews laugh at me because I play such an old game. But, I've been playing this game for at least

eight years if not longer. It keeps me amused. It has worked on this same computer for that long without issue

until Norton Security Suite was installed. Now, about every minute while I'm playing the game it becomes slow and jerky

to the point that it's not worth playing while NSS is running. If I disable the service, my game runs fine.

I have excluded the program folder and the executable and the entire cd drive letter from scanning. The firewall is set for allow for this program. Yet, Norton appears to still be interfering with my game in some way.

    Any idea why?

Jeff

I decided to check resource usage via task manager while unreal and norton were running.

When the NSS service is started, I get periodic cpu spikes between 92% and 100%

and also about another 100mb of Page File usage on average.

The cpu spikes occur every few minutes or so which seems to correspond with the game freezup while

I'm playing.

If I stop the NSS service, there are no cpu spikes and the game plays normally.

Why is unrealtournament.exe being messed with by Norton when I have it excluded

from real time scans?

Hello jeff_unreal

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Wow, another person who plays Unreal Tournament 99 I assume since you said you been playing it for so long. Don't feel bad, I've been playing it since it came out. I'm still using System Works 12 which includes NAV 2009. I'm about to update in about 6 weeks to either NAV or NIS 2011. I know I haven't had any problems playing Monster Hunt with the NAV 2009 installed. Also I don't have Comcast Norton Security Suite, so I don't know if I can help you answer the problem. I will be curious though to see the solution for this problem. I am worried about how the game would work since it is so old. Do you play it thru the game itself or do you play it like thru GameSpy Arcade or some other site perhaps?

Can you list UT in the silent mode and see if that helps? Thanks.

PS. My usual avatar in here is a gal from UT.

Hi floplot,

I'm not sure what you mean by list UT, but I have tried silent mode

and that doesn't help. I've disabled other components and the only

thing that works is to stop the service itself.

The cd does say 1999 on it, so I guess that's it. Norton support suggested

I upgrade to the next version of NSS. I guess I'll do that, but I'm not expecting

that to solve anything. It seems odd to me that I exclude the program from

real time scan, but it still is affected every minute or so.

Thanks for your input.

Hello Jeff

What security program did you use before Comcast Norton Security Suite and how was it removed? Did you use the control panel method with a reboot and then the removal tool from the other company and run that 2 times with a reboot after each run of it? If you didn't remove the other security program from your computer thoroughly, it could interfere with the proper install of your Comcast Norton product and the proper running of the program also. Thanks.

Comcast used McAfee prior to changing to Norton, however the last version of McAfee did the same thing

to my game. I would have followed whatever directions were prompted when installing Norton.

I don't recall exactly, but I would have rebooted if it asked me to.

There is only NSS anti-virus in add/remove programs.

In c:\program files there are the following directrories: Norton Security Suite, NortonInstaller, Norton Support, Symantec.

I'm wondering if Norton just uses too much memory. I only have 768Mb on this old machine.

I did not purchase more because unfortunately HP chose to use rambus memory which

was very expensive back then. I have no idea if third party's offer it cheaply now. I would not want to sink

any money into this old machine despite the fact that it is a dual processor 600.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hello Jeff

My son can play Unreal Tournament on his computer with N360 installed which is similar to Comcast Norton Security Suite. I would suggest that you download and use the McAfee removal tool and then remove your CNSS and then try installing a fresh install that you can get from Comcast. You can see if perhaps having a clean install of the program will help. The low ram shouldn't matter to Unreal Tournament since the game was made like 10 or 11 years ago.

Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for CNSS? I think you would have to check that out from the comcast site.

You can use the Norton Removal Tool which will remove all Norton products. Please follow the directions on this link

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN

You can get Comcast Norton Security Suite from this link.

http://us.norton.com/support/comcast.jsp?pvid=nsce_1&entsrc=Comcast

You can also use the free chat from that link also if need be.

But first you would have to get the McAfee removal tool and use that.

It is possible that there are some remnants from McAfee still in your computer which may have interfered with the install of your CNSS program. Please remember to run live update to get all the available updates and then reboot.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Thanks Floptop,

     I'll give it a try.
