Unspecified Error Message

I bought a brand new HP withWindows 7about 6 months ago. about a month and a half ago my pre installed subscription to norton expired and i renewed it on it's website (whatever the fifty to sixty dollar one is. i forget). Now I find that when i try to open norton, all i get is a little rectangular box with the minimize, enlarge (which does nothing) and X buttons. Essentially, I get nothing. I right click on the pin on the taskbar and I click Run Quckscan since, in theory, Norton is open. I get this message:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\17.7.0.12\uistub.exe
Unspecified Error

I go to control panel and my system security settings tells me that Norton reports it is turned off. Naturally, I click to turn it back on wondering when I would have ever decided it would b a good idea to turn off.

Nothing happens.

If anyone has a solution, please help me out. thx

HI Lucere589

I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling your Norton Internet Security.

Uninstall via add/remove in the control panel and then download NIS from the following link and save it to your desktop.

www.norton.com/nis10

Run the file you saved and, once installed, run liveupdate until you get a message that there are no more updates. You should be asked to reboot after some of the updates have installed.

The installer should automatically pick up your activation key.

I will ask a moderator to move your post to the NIS/NAV Forum.

Hi Lucere589,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

I'd like to clarify the timeline and events that have transpired since you got your new computer.

You said the subscription that came with your computer expired 1 1/2 months ago but you got your computer about 6 months ago. Most trial subscriptions on new computers last only about 90 days (sometimes less) so it seems there may be some missing time here.

Did NIS work correctly when you first received the computer? If so, when did you start noticing this problem? Have you noticed any other unusual problems that started occurring since you got your computer?

Was there any period in which you were unprotected? E.g., after your trial subscription ended and before you renewed your subscription through Symantec website?

Have you installed any other security (anti-virus, etc) software since you got your computer?

Thanks

Allen
