Update to NIS2008 or Jump Ship?

Thanks for the quick response.  I actually don't want to turn off automatic update altogether; I'm trying to figure out why "LUCOMS" is running every hour if I have the auto updates set to every 12 hours.

Is LUCOMS tied into automatic updates or to the Live Update Notice? As I mentioned, every hour when LUCOMS starts up, I can check my task manager and see 5 or 6 instances of "LuCallbackProxy" plus 1 instance of "LUCOMS" running and it takes about 5 minutes before they "unload" from the processes.

I edited this post as the multiple processes that run are actually called "LuCallbackProxy".

LUCOMS is the LiveUpdateCOMmsServer as far as I’m aware and it checks for internet connectivity.

While it may be running in the background, it is not necessarily connecting to the internet; more just running as a process. Please check next time it is running if it has any ports open.

WARNING:THE FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY CONFIDENT SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS. ALWAYS CREATE BACKUPS BEFORE RUNNING ANY SYSTEM PROCESSES AS INCORRECTLY EXECUTING OTHER COMMANDS OTHER THAN THE ONES LISTED BELOW COULD POTENTIALLY HARM YOUR SYSTEM. SYMANTEC IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OR LOSS THAT MAY (ALTHOUGH UNLIKELY) BE CAUSED BY RUNNING THESE STEPS.

When you see LUCOMS open or any other Symantec files do the following:

Click Start –> Run.

enter “CMD”

in the prompt enter “netstat -a -b -n”

What does that do? Netstat gives statistics about the system’s open ports and files that are running.

-a switch shows ALL ports.

-b switch shows the file that is responsible for the open port or connection

-n makes it look pretty (no, really its just making it numerical.)

Let us know if it has any ESTABLISHED connections (TIME_WAIT and CLOSE_WAIT status means that the file is not transferring data)

Otherwise you can await a staff member’s response.

Dave,

Thanks for the tip about checking for internet connectivity. I'll try your suggestion and report back, however I am still wondering why this process wants to run every hour.

Okay, I've tried the netstat option for checking connectivity.  I had a bit of a hard time getting the info as I repeatedly got a "windows exception error" box. However I did see one instance of LUCOMS which looked like it had opened a port, however the other multiple (4) "LuCallbackProxy" processes were not listed in netstat. I did not see TIME_WAIT and CLOSE_WAIT .

Still, the multiple LuCallbackProxy caused a slowing of opening other windows while they were running.

Any help on the issue of multiple processes running every hour or an accurate description of how NIS2008 handles the update process would be much appreciated.

Phil

If LiveUpdate has a pending update that for some reason fails to install you can get the multiple callbacks. Check that you have all program updates installed by manually running LiveUpdate through the Luall command from Start > Run (set LiveUpdate to interactive mode for more details about the updates). Install any updates in the list and note if any errors occur. If you get an error stating that LiveUpdate is already running you can try and run Luall the first thing you do after reboot.

Live UpdateNotice should be listed in the Add or Remove programs list if you want to remove it all in all. You might get a question to install it again on every LU session afterwards though.

hi Phil - i suspect corruption of your liveupdate catalog and/or product inventory file that is causing the redundant occurances of lucoms - try the steps in this doc. updating to NIS 08 also refereshes the catalog (i think - it does have a new version of LU with it), so that would be the logical next step.

When you re-boot your computer, or when you switch your computer on for the first time, as soon as you Connect to the Internet, LiveUpdate Runs if you have got Automatic Update On; I would suggest, before Connecting to the Internet, to go to Start > Run > Luall because, if the Manual LiveUpdate is up, Automatic Update will not Run.

jAW, mel, Floating _Red,

Thank you for the suggestions. I shall try them this evening and let you know how they worked. Should I decide to update to 2008, I assume 2007 should be fully removed with uninstall and the Norton Removal Tool before proceeding with the NIS2008 install?

The N.I.S. 2008 install should fully Remove Previous Versions of N.I.S. so there is no need to use N.R.T. un-less you would like to be 100% sure that N.I.S. 2007 is Fully Removed; just remember that N.R.T. does un-install all Norton Products on your computer and not just N.I.S.; be advised that, if you choose to use Norton Removal Tool (N.R.T.), you will be leaving your computer At Risk to Internet Threats and, once you have Installed the Version of N.I.S. you are Installing, would Run a Full System Scan. As mentioned, it is okay to Run Install for the Late-est Version as this will un-install Previous Versions of N.I.S..

I have been a Norton user for many years and was very pleased to see the lighter “footprint” of NIS2007.

My problem is that “LUCOMS” is running every hour throughout the day, even though I have the auto updates set for every 12 hours. When it does run there are often upwards of 5 to 6 instances of it running at once. I know that Norton says the process runs unnoticed in the background, however when it does decide to run I can see the effect in the memory intensive applications that I use for video and image editing.  There is a definite slowdown, despite having 2 GB RAM. I wish I had the option to shut this off. I try to keep my running processes at about 25, but this bugger makes it jump up to 31 at times.

Since my subscription runs out in about 30 days, here are my questions:

1) Is LUCOMS related to the automatic update or to the Live Update Notice?

2) Does NIS2008 have the same issue with “LUCOMS” or something similar running randomly at will regardless of the user settings?

3) How does the “footprint” of NIS2008 compare to NIS2007?

4) Does NIS2008 have something like the current “Live Update Notice” which I wish I could turn off as I consider it to be product advertising?

Any input would be appreciated because although I'd love to stay with Norton, I’m not going to put up with a protection product that arbitrarily slows down my work.  I’ve been a loyal Norton customer for many years, but I may have to jump ship this time.

I assume you are referring to Automatic Update? To Turn Off: Start > Control Panel > Symantec LiveUpdate > Automatic Update. Make sure you also Turn Off on the Product as well as the Control Panel. I would advise anyone who has Automatic Update On to Set it to Run Every Two Hours if using N.I.S. 2007/2008.

N.I.S. 2008 is better than N.I.S. 2007; I would strongly advise you to Upgrade to N.I.S. 2008. N.I.S. is lightly than N.I.S. 2007; I noticed the difference right away and I love it! N.I.S. 2008 also has important Features Added, like Crimeware which Blocks Programs which try to get information during your Online Transactions; it also has Suspicious Activity Monitoring; N.I.S. 2008 has at least two Virus Definitions Updates Daily.
