Updates aren't the same as they used to be

I used to get alot of updates with the previous version of 360 like whitelist and hub updates and a few others I can't remember except I know that I'm not getting them anymore.

Seems like the only updates I'm getting now are web protection definitions, pulse and the occasional reputation revocation list.

why?

has 360 changed that much with the new version?

thanks for help again

Hi again!

Thank you for answering. I still think something odd is going on. I posted this picture below with my question in red on it. I, too check for updates first thing in the morning. Right after I checked for updates I got a windows program that was blocked trying to access Norton which is good, right? My confusion is about the login. I completely shut down my computer last night (usually I leave it on and just turn off the speakers and monitor) but last night I shut down completely. Norton security history shows me as logging off. Then it shows me as logging back on last night. I didn't log back on last night. Could it be incorrectly logging this morning's login with the wrong time? why? anyway here is a picture of it. Maybe if you would, help me sort it out so I understand? Thank you F4E you're a kind and patient friend and so is Dave and delphinium :smileyhappy:

Good morning, Footsie:

Yes, it is fine that Norton stops anything touching its files.  No problem there.

I can't see your picture yet.  It will become available in a bit when the Mods review it.

With regard to the time issue, Norton doesn't deal with time.  It just reports what the computer tells it.  The computer, or Windows, is in charge of maintaining the correct time, and it should connect to the internet to keep time synchronized.  You also have a cmos battery that should maintain the correct time between synchronizations.

Do you know how to check and correct the time in your pc?

yes I sync my pc with the time server once a month or so I think.

thank you delphinium! I will wait until the mods review the picture and see what you think :)

ttys!

Paula

I can see the image now.  It looks weird, but what I think happened is that your machine logged  you in before it had time to synch the time automatically.  It might indicate that your cmos battery is weak, as the time stays accurate when the machine is on, but loses time when it is shut down.

You can test it by shutting the machine down every couple of nights to see if it loses time regularly or if this was a glitch.  If it does it regularly, you will need to have it changed, which will take a trip to the repair shop.  It's best not to fool with the motherboard.  That may explain the oddities with Norton updates as well if the time is off.

cmos.jpg

oh no!

is that going to cost alot?

I'm very poor.

The cmos batteries are like watch batteries and fairly cheap, maybe $3-$5.  There will be a bit more expense to pay the tech.  I'm thinking you have a laptop, so taking them apart can be tricky depending on where the cmos is.  Static, especially this time of year is something to be avoided, and they should have anti-static equipment to avoid that risk.  You may be wise to phone a couple of the local shops to see how much they will charge to change it. I'm guessing maybe $10 - $25 but I don't know where you are.

I live in the westernmost U.P. Michigan USA... it costs $60 just to walk in the door of the local tech offices around here (extremely rural) That doesn't include them doing anything. They charge extra for that.

My pc is a desktop...I can't work a laptop due to some hand issues. I hope they don't do away with desktop PCs...they need to think about us disabled and elderly...it's not so easy to do the laptop thing. Hard on the hands and neck.

I suppose I will just have to save up. The computer is only three years old. I hope it's not the battery! I usually leave it on at night but shut it down when I get frustrated lol. I try to restart every few days if I've left it on just to refresh everything.

for a while I was checking for updates every few minutes (ocd) sigh. the program seems to have taken the abuse lol.

are there any other things the computer will do if it's battery is bad?

I've had several issues pop up and then go away. I don't know what to think of it all lol. Sometimes I just give up and pray lol.

Thanks for the heads up on the battery thing. I really hope I don't have to pay for tech again. Last time I took it in (kept freezing...he said it was a game from wild tangent ...he said wild tangent was a bad company) I loved that game. It kept the ocd under control because I could just zone out and play it (just a kid's game but what the heck lol) and it ran on my computer okay (very low end computer from local superstore) it had some pups but never were a problem I don't think. MBAM didn't see them as a problem. Spybot S and S wanted to remove them but I though they would make the game not work so I left them on

Oh...the tech from town I went to:

He installed three programs that I didn't give the okay to install. I din't give him the okay to do anything but find out why my computer was freezing up. He didn't uninstall the game he said was a problem, I had to do that myself. The programs he installed... One was cc cleaner one was hitman pro and I don't remember the other one but when I clicked on them, they hadn't even been installed yet or used, he just downloaded them and never ran them. I took them off. I didn't know how to use them.

The other company I walked in the door and he must have been able to tell I was disabled or something because he gave me a dirty look and was very rude when I asked him about my computer symptoms. I didn't go back there but took it to the other place where he changed settings (I found out by trial and error). He turned off my windows update but I turned it back on but I'm not sure if it still works or not...

Also when I contacted the remote chat people at Norton (program was freezing up), they uninstalled and reinstalled my firefox which changed all my settings, opened up internet explorer (that I had disabled in set default program access) and changed a bunch of things so fast I didn't even know what he was doing. Then he just said everything is fine have a nice day lol and I thanked him. I didn't know what else to do lol

Had a power outage in the shutdown stage while computer said 'installing windows updates please don't shut off computer'

when I viewed history of windows update it says the new .NET framework is installed

when I viewed the 'installed update' page of windows update it isn't there.

when I run the troubleshooter sometimes it says things are okay no problems found and then other times it says there are errors.

I guess I won't know if windows updates will work or not until next time they come out with them.

it's a nightmare

all I want to do is be able to visit online with my kids and grandkids and do jigsaw puzzles and read the news and watch movies and tv on hulu and you tube. It passes the time.

I don't do anything to harm anyone. I'm just a disabled old fart trying to survive lol

:smileyhappy: Paula

So, Footsie, have you ever taken the side of your case off to clean out the dust and have a look in there?  Have a look at the back of it to see if there are screws or thumb-type screws to take the side panels off.  My older desktop has to have the front face ripped off to slide out the sides.  The newer one, which should be about the same age as yours has little thumb screws, and the sides just fit into slots at the top and a groove at the bottom.

Let us know what you have got, and how familiar you are with the insides of your machine.

A bad cmos with screw up Norton updates, Windows updates, and a number of other authentications, including your genuine Windows authentication.

Hi again delphinium!

yep! first time I took it in to a tech was just to have the inside cleaned out. He didn't charge me anything that time. That was pretty cool!. (about 2 or three months ago before the freeze up problem I took it in to have it cleaned inside.)

I don't know what cmos is but the inside is squeaky clean as of 2 months ago. These apartments are pretty dusty in the winter...I keep my computer dusted well on the outside and will take it back in to have it cleaned again inside in the spring if it lasts that long lol. Not able to do it myself. sigh.

Went to the community building (senior and disabled apartment complex)...for holidays dinner they serve for us. Checked my security history when I got back and while I was gone there were like 30 blocked access attempts while I was gone. Really weird it happened only while I was gone for half an hour.

This better be genuine windows. This computer came with windows 7 sp 1 installed on it when I bought it.

It must be frustrating for you to have to try to figure out all this. Sorry. I am doing my best to help you help me. :smileyhappy:

thank you so much again and again

Paula

No it isn't frustrating, at all.  It isn't too hard to change the cmos yourself, but I would like to know if:

1.  Are you familiar with the inside of your computer.

2. have you taken one side panel or the other off yourself

3.  if you take a side panel off, usually the left side looking at it from the front, can you see the cmos battery.  WITHOUT touching anything inside. (that will tell me if the battery is on the front or the back of the motherboard)  You don't have to turn off the power for a peek.

If this is way over your comfort level, you will need to see the tech.

PS it is very easy to clean the dust out yourself.  You shouldn't need to pay a tech for that job.

Hi delphinium!:smileyhappy:

The tech in town didn't charge me for cleaning my computer inside. I am not physically able to take the cover off of my computer.

Something odd just happened. Norton 360 Update ran and there was an incomplete unable to download two of the updates. (It was an auto update) I looked in the security history and saw it was a medium risk.

I deleted all my history and temp files with internet options in control panel.

I did a custom scan task with norton 360 and deleted temp files and history.

Ran a manual update and the update was 149.01 MB and was successful.

That's really a huge update. It said that web protection and anti virus definitions were updated.

anyway.... so strange. I don't understand soooooooo much! lol

:smileyhappy:

Paula

Okay, so a self-fix is out.  You are going to run into a number of different problems until the battery is replaced is my guess.  You should probably keep the computer on so that you have a charge going to the battery.  Norton and Windows updates are apt to be unreliable until it gets fixed.  There isn't much else you can do other than running manual updates.  Keep an eye on your date and time and keep it accurate.

Hi delphinium :smileyhappy:

okay I will keep it on. does that mean no restart every couple of days then eh?

wow. what happens if the power goes out? I live in a very very icy snowy power goes out area lol

you are a peach ( that's a compliment ) and I thank you so very much.

I will do every thing I can to keep it on. I am very surprised that a computer only a couple of years old is having battery problems!

I will try not to be a pain in the neck on the boards but unfortunately I am also mentally disabled so sometimes I post out of sheer desperation.

Its seems so easy for some people...

have a great night and I am going to go watch a film or do a jigsaw puzzle or something that doesn't require much thinking lol

:smileyhappy: Paula

I've read most of your posts, and I think you are a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for.  You describe your issues very well, you are comfortable with your own limitations, and you have no trouble with our explanations.  The only difference is in experience, which you will also gain.  You are always welcome here. :smileyhappy:

I don't want to worry you too much, but definitely don't shut it down any more.  It may shut itself down as the battery weakens, and then it may boot with a low cmos warning.  The computer relies on the cmos to work with the bios in keeping track of its parts. It might tell you that it can't find the hard drive, or the keyboard or the mouse.  Then it's shop time, so we'll hope to get as much out of it as possible to give you some save up time.  Get the tech to check the power source as well to make sure it isn't adversely  affecting the cmos.

Hi delphinium :smileyhappy:

I have another picture for you. I think you are right about the battery. It just HAS to be that. I can't imagine what else it could be. I am wondering why in the power settings that the wireless adapter was set to maximum performance when I don't have anything wireless for my computer. I hope I didn't muck things around when I changed it to maximum power savings. Like I said, I don't have any wireless adapters that I know of. Is there anything on my system that's supposed to use wireless? It's just a rinky dink little e machines lol.

I'll put the picture up. I had the power set to never shut monitor off and never sleep...I just shut off the speakers and monitor manually before going to bed.

I ran the power troubleshooter and it set my monitor to shut off after ten minutes and my computer to sleep after 30 minutes. I am afraid if it goes to sleep it won't wake back up. Should I set the power setting back to never shut monitor off and never sleep?

here is a 3 piece picture...like I stated, I changed the wireless setting from max performance to max power saving.

powerprobs12-2013.jpg

I don't think windows is finding the battery. It isn't listed in the top righthand picture?

:smileyhappy: Paula

Hi, Paula. I agrree with delphinium, in that you've been describing your computer problems perfectly well.

We can try to help with software problems and so on, but when it comes to hardware problems, is when you need to seek physical help.

Do you know ANYONE who may be computer literate enough, to check your computer over ?

Friends ? Friend's kids ? Do you qualify for any kind of community help ?

Sorry, I'm in Australia, so I don't know what's on offer, where you are.

I think I would set it to not sleep, but we can get a second opinion from F4E.

I'm from Ontario, so I can tell you that Michigan is not a fun place to be this time of year. :smileysad:

Hi delphinium and Paula. Fwiw, I would set the computer not to sleep/hibernate as sometimes that can cause problems, and set the hard disk never to be switched off.

The troubleshooter when run, has obviously set the best options to save power.
