Updates failing

When I run LiveUpdate, the second and third stages fail: The first stage “Check for updates” works, then the “Download Updates” and “Process Updates” stages fail. I suspect that it’s either a damaged LiveUpdate files issue, or that it’s a cache issue. 1 - If it’s a damaged/corrupted LiveUpdate issue, how can I reinstall LiveUpdate ? 2 - If it’s a cache issue, how can I clear the cache in my NIS 2013, bearing in mind that I do not see any LiveUpdate icon in Windows Control Panel. I run XP SP3 with Intel Atom processor.

Hi,

If live update is still failing you might try running the auto fix feature from the support dropdown. If that fails then the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool will download a clean copy of the program to your computer.

Be sure to save your identity safe data before starting any repairs. After using the removal tool be sure to run live update until the program tells you that all of the updates have been downloaded and installed.

Keep us posted

Thanks Dick for your reply. However, that reinstall and uninstall tool doesn’t run properly and comes up with “unrecoverable error”. I ran it a few times and that’s what I got. And then it leads me to a page with just an uninstall tool. So should I download that uninstall tool, and if so how do I reinstall ?. I’m wondering if this whole uninstall/reinstall business is necessary or is the only solution ?

Apart from the issues above, I now know that my ISP is caching some stuff which is causing me trouble, because LiveUpdate now comes runs without a crash but comes up with “not required” for the second and third stages even though my definitions are more than a day old !. Surely NIS LiveUpdate should not be fooled so easily by a sloppy ISP cache setup !. I mean instead of telling me that no updates are required, it should alert me that it is not able to access the latest updates, right ?

Hi kooduav,

"Not required" indicates that LiveUpdate has compared the Norton files on your PC against the latest updates available, and has determined that you already have all of the latest updates.  If LiveUpdate had been unable to access the Norton server you would have received a connection error code.

Hi kooduav,

Is this what you are seeing?  If so it means that you are totally updated and thre are no more updates availabel for download (at this time)  There may be others within a few minutes.

Have you checked your history  - LiveUpdate on the drop down.  By highlighting the Live Update and then selecting More Details - it will tell you what was downloaded and even what failed.  That way you can check to see which updates item caused the inital problem.

I have never heard of an ISP caching "some stuff" - what and what type of troubles lead you to this?

If you need more info - let us know - butit sounds like all is OK now.

Thanks Yank, That screen is exactly what I'm getting. However, my virus definitions are over a day old; is that possible, that no new definitions have been released in the last 24 hours ?.

As for the "more details" and "history", I see nowhere on the NIS 2013 interface for such function, can you clarify where to click ?

FWIW - my most recent Virus definitions in NIS 2013 was about 5 minutes ago.

Main page of NIS 2013,  > Advanced > under Computer Protection > History > Drop down Arrow on right of Recent History > Scroll down to and select LiveUpdate > Select a LiveUpdate and then in the right hand box sleect More Details.  There will be a box titled Total Updates Applied showing a number and the plus (+) sign.  Clicking the + will show which items were applied.

If you can find a LiveUpdate that has an orange dot (Medium) in the Severity column, selct it, more details and the + - will show you which update failed.

This may be similar to an issue I posted on 12/19/12 where I would not have any updates other than pulse updates for like 20 hours. Last update was 2am 12/18/12. I run live update and get the message no update required or I’d get a pulse update only. But then like 10pm 12/19/12 I received like 6 updates at the same down load.

Should read last update was 2am 12/19/12

Just to conclude this issue, I've managed to sort out the problem.

1 - I've changed ISP and now there's none of that crap with caching. However, this does indicate that NIS can be fooled by ISP caching, which is something I hope they can fix in the future.

2 - I used two separate tools to uninstall and reinstall NIS - I found this to work better than using the single integrated tool which crashed on my machine.

Thanks once more to all those in the community who replied to and helped with this post :smileyvery-happy:

Hi,
