In order to use System Restore you need to turn off Norton’s self protection. There is a well detailed thread about it.
The problem is the missing MSVCP71.dll and MSVCR71.dll that an uninstall won't replace.
I did a search on these files and found a host of queries.
The first query I found (followed by a whole lot of ME, TOO's:
Hi everyone, I am new and hope i dont seem to computer ignorant but I am in need of help. A few days ago I attempted to download a free trial of Norton Antivirus. It came straight from the Symantec site. It downloaded fine (i guess) but when it went to initialize I got a " has encounterd a error and needs to close" message. It did not finish installing and said i would need to reinstall. I tried reinstalling the product and it did fine until it came to the point of uninstalling the previous download attempt. I tried to uninstall what had made its way to my computer with no luck. When I shut down and re-booted I started recieving a error message saying file could not open Msvcp71.dll missing. I didnt know what to do so i purchased a FIX-IT 6 disc and it did alot for my computer but fix the problem with the dll file. I am unable to go to certain web pages now and I cannot even delete messages from my yahoo mail after reading them. I have managed to download a dll file but do not know where to send it after unzipping it. Can anyone please help me? I am frustrated and hate feeling stupid when it comes to my PC. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Christa
Dear Christa was given a replacement MSVCP71.dll, which worked only partially for her.
What concerned me is that Christa was only the first of numerous queries about the same issue on that site. This now seems to be clearly a Norton issue; so I will wait for one of the staff to see if I have info they need.
More:
I retried a System Update trying Phil's tactic of turning off Tamper Protection. That worked. Sort of. What I really mean is that the restore went through but the missing files were still missing. Since MSVCP71.dll exists in a number of different places on my computer, I can't really assume they are all the same and just go sticking one in place, I would think. Same for MSVCR71.dll. The problem here is that the main product that would help me find the missing pieces is Norton SystemWorks and that is one of the broken pieces.
I may try to run NSW off the CD and identify the missing links then replace them. It will help pass the time until a Symantec expect gets here.
More on the System Restore technique. I tried to use the same method to go back two or three days and was unable to do so. I also checked the Event Viewer and it report a large number of bad (X) errors related to the successful System Restore in terms of missing files. I'm surprised it even allowed it.
Hi mijcar,
I just did a search of my computer and I don't see any MSVCP71.dll directly associated with NIS 2009.
Can you confirm that you have MSVCP71.dll in "C:\Windows\system32" ?
I am sending you a PM with a screen shot of my search results for this file association.
I know that in this post, Quads had a totally different issue than yours, however he also mentioned it occurred shortly after a recent update of today.
?????
Here is a screenshot from the CD run of Norton Systemworks. I did not apply any of their suggestions.
So, I tried the following strategies.
1. Uninstall NSW since it was dead in the water. Uninstall failed (it took 40 minutes to do so, because it had to backup from the point it had gotten to). This is the error message that was produced:
2. I started backing up important recent stuff to a memory stick. MSI installer trying to install itself (or so something claimed) in order to run the migration wizard. I cancelled it a number of times. Seems like something may be trying to steal my stuff. If so, why is NIS catching it?
More. I am not going to uninstall any of the Norton stuff with the Norton Removal Tool. There are too many non-Norton things that have been affected by this; and we need to see what is happening. I did run MalwareBytes as a secondary test for infection and found nothing.
My inclination is still to systemic rather than viral.
At first I would have said that a reboot might help. I did have the same messages two weeks ago. But now it looks like you have too much trouble with several Norton products. I would say thet the NRT tool is the only thing you could do right now
Not even that. I think it may be a new virus. Complete Image replacement is what is next. just waiting for Symantec to wake up.
Well, whoda thought?
Not a single staff response. Here we are with what might or might not be a real infection that got through Norton Safe Web and Norton Internet Security and appears to be trying to use MS Migration as a way to collect and pass on data. And it might be a new virus.
And not a word.
Well, I'll keep this on my computer another couple of hours, then I'm reimaging. Anyone wants to look at my computer -- you better let me know soon!
The first set of errors sounds like a file was moved/replaced/unregistered that shouldn't have been. Have you tried re-registry MSVCP71.dll? You can do this from the Run line with regsvr32 followed by the file (including location). The Windoctor results could be due to this as well. What happens when you have Windoctor try to fix the errors?
You refer to a migration wizard. Which migration wizard are you referring to?
If you tried uninstall NSW and it failed, then you are stuck with having to run NRT. When you say you have too many non-Norton stuff that have been affected, what exactly do you have that's experienced this?
Erik,
If you will look at the earlier posts, you will see products such as Nikon View that have been affected.
If you look at the NSW report, you will see I'm missing elements like kernel.exe, various shared software.
And we don't know the root causes.
By the migration wizard, I meant the wizard that appears when you try to launch Windows System Migration. This is product that collects all your settings on one computer (including passwords, activation keys, outlook files, documents, etc) and compresses them into a form for installation on another computer. It is used when someone has a system they want to move from an old computer to a new computer. It's also a great way to commit piracy.
When I try to copy a file from my computer to a memory stick, instead of it copying immediately, I get a splash notification that windows system migration wizard is being installed. EVERY TIME! I didn't launch it. It is being launched by some other process. And to me the behavior implies attempted theft.
Why in the world would I want to uninstall the only protection I have in order to make a misguided attempt to replace a few of these missing files? Kernel.exe is not on my system at all. Neither are some of the missing files identified by systemworks. I don't see the point of running Norton Removal Tool. Do you? Am I missing something?
The only reason I haven't reimaged my drive is I thought that someone at Symantec might find this curious and want to explore it further before I erased it completely.
I am also concerned that one of the 2000 files listed at kupz1.net might have infected me. Norton said it blocked an attempt to get into my computer, but I am wondering if it really was successfully.
NSW won't run. One Button Check up keeps reporting it can't load vital elements, but then says the computer is fine.
mij,
I was only looking at this post, and I do not see any specific problems mentioned after running NRT.
iKernel.exe is a component of install shield.
What you are describing with the MSI prompt I would not take as theft. I would say that a component is trying to be used that is missing or corrupt and the installer is attempting a repair. If you were to look in the Windows Event logs you should see entries from the Installer referring to missing items.
If those files are no longer physically present on the drive, then there are definitely problems. A virus does not have to be the only explanation. That said, there are a lot of critical files missing here. There are two approaches.
- Reinstall each application affected
- Restore the image you mentioned earlier
I came home, woke the computer from standby, was notified after about 4 minutes of a need to reboot for Norton updates. Rebooted and got the following warnings:
I tried to restore to the most recent restore point (yesterday a.m.), but it did not take. My current intention is to restore the system to a week old image; but I won't do that until this has been resolved. No reason to lose all those hours and have the same problem recur.
Any suggestions? Anyone need to know anything? See anything? Now is the time to ask. Get copies of any logs?
Okay. That makes the sense.
So many files disappeared at the same time. The only activity I engaged in prior to that was visiting kupz1.net and clicking on one of the four-digit file links, which got me a warning that an intrusion attempt had just been blocked. I thought the two events might be linked.
It's allways possible, but the problems you're experiencing are limiting your options as to your next steps.
That’s for sure. Well, time for a reimage.
And I’m back. Reimaged and all. Guess we’ll never know what really was on my system.
Why dont you try doing a Complete uninstall and reinstall. Use the Norton Removal tool. Only takes minutes.
