Gentlemen,
I've stopped running Norton Live Update.
I have a dial-up connection and the full update list chosen by LU is suddenly beyond the ability of my connection. I've managed to update the virus definitions by downloading the database manually. This download includes the Symantec Intelligent Updater that installs the updates, bypassing LU. I can do it only because this method allows me to use a third party download manager which supports resuming from broken downloads. LU will not do this simple thing, it just restarts at zero.
Live Update updates a lot more than just the virus definitions. I don't know whether the virus definitions database provided through the Intelligent Updater includes updates for other threats as well -- like rootkits, non-virus malware, etc. But this is the only database I can find that can be downloaded manually. When I ran Intelligent Updater the little check-mark symbol on the Norton icon in the system tray went from red to green and the "Security" box in the Norton 360 main window has a green check and it says "Protected".
So, I have two questions: First, are there other update databases that can be downloaded and installed manually like this; and secondly, do I need to worry about my online security if I only update the virus definitions but not the other stuff that LU updates?
Like I said, I can't take the update list that LU retrieves if I launch it manually, I'm relying soley now on the background retrieval of virus definitions which seems to be working okay. Admittedly this is not an ideal situation, but it's all I can manage.
If it matters, I'm running the latest version of N360 -- v.21.5. something-or-other.
Any useful information is appreciated.
