First you can download the NIS 2008 on your desktop. Then go ahead and remove the NAV2008 version.

Once you remove the NAv 2008 version you can start installing the NIS 2008,during which you need not have the DSL connection.

After installing the NIS 2008, connect the computer to internet and activate the product. No need to turn off the Windows firewall.

If I buy NIS 2008 will I have to uninstall NAV2008 before installing NIS? If I do so, how do I keep my computer safe during the transition? Should I turn on my Vista firewall and/or turn off my DSL connection?

Norton products normally remove a previous version if they find one but since NAV is inside NIS I am not certain what will happen if you try to install NIS2008 when NAV2008 is installed.

I doubt you will do any harm by trying if you are concerned about security during the transition. Of course you can always unplug your Internet connection but I don't recommend that since Norton goes for updated files as part of the installation procedure.

If you are behind a firewall -- especially a physical one like a router -- or even Windows Defender, and provided you do not go exploring the internet or downloading email while installing NIS you really have little to worry IMO. Most "attacks" are the result of the user doing something unsafe rather than something lurking out there waiting for you not to have protection!

thanks. maybe I should just get a hard firewall while I'm at it. Unfortunately, my DSL connection does not contain a firewall.

Oh one thing, windows defender is antispyware not a firewall

Mine is in my wireless router/switch between the PC and cable modem.

My confusion ... read :Windows Firewall"

Use the Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AntiVirus 2008 and then Download and Install Norton Internet Security 2008.  Just remember that you will need to re-install all Norton Products you have Installed so only use the N.R.T. if you have a C.D. or Extended Download Service or back-up the files to the Products and then use the Norton Removal Tool.
