Upgrade from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011

I just bought a new pc wihch has NIS v17.8.0.5 already installed on it with 57 days subcription left to go

Seeing that I havent paid for the Norton subcription, am I entitle to upgrade from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 for free?

If so, which is the the best metod of doing a clean unistall of NIS 2010 removing all traces of my current version?

Methood 1

Uninstall NIS 2010 via add/remove

then Reboot

then run Norton Removal Tool

Then run ccleaner >  registry scan

then roboot and install NIS 2011

or

Method 2

Just run the Norton Removal Tool

then ccleaner

then Roboot

I also have Norton Onlin Backup which I want to uninstall and use another program. Will the Norton Removal Tool be sufficient in uninstalling it, also leaving no traces oif it

Thanks

I’ve written a step method to upgrade nis11. Just before running the Norton removal tool, remove all the existing Norton/Symantec programs through add or remove first. The tool is there for tricky removals and after removal clean up only. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Where-can-I-find-NIS-2011/td-p/302660

Hi Tony67,

I must differ on this one. If your NIS 2010 is working properly with no problems then NIS 2011 is designed to be installed over the top and this most often works without any problems.

In the unlikely event problems are encountered the removal tool method can be used at that time.

We do always recommend to back up your Identity Safe as explained here. Also save your product key from your Norton account. These are just precautions in the unlikely event something goes wrong so that you don't lose anything.

In prior years products the removal tool was used more often but during the past 2-3 years or so the upgrades have become much more streamlined and Symantec no longer recommends this method unless you are having problems with your current version.

In the end it is your choice which method you use but it is not required to uninstall first and use the removal tool unless you are having problems with your current version.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
Allen

I included the removal tool because he wanted to replace Norton online back up with something else.

I understand, I am just outlining that it is not really necessary and online backup can also be removed in the conventional way. At the same time there is nothing wrong with using the removal tool if one wants to do that. :smileywink:

Tony, please let us know your intent on use of the removal tool or not. If you do decide to use that method just be sure to do a conventional uninstall first and then run the removal tool twice with a reboot in between each one.

Also since you apparently have NIS 2010 trial version, yes you can upgrade to NIS 2011 but you will be limited to the remaining duration of your existing trial period after which you will need to purchase a subscription to continue protection beyond that.

Best wishes.

Just to make myself clear does remains of the online backup affect other back up programs the same way left over security program can affect Norton if you are switching over.

Hi Tywin7,

This should not cause a problem, in this case also because online backup stores backups to an online server. Even with something like Ghost which is much more integrated you should be able to do a conventional uninstall vs the removal tool.

Security software embeds its roots very deeply into your OS in order to provide full protection. Backup programs don't need to go so deep.

Good thinking though.

Best wishes.
