I have Norton System Works Basic Edition 2008 and NIS 08. To upgrade NIS'06 I bought 2 yrs. in Nov.'07 and apparently didn't get it installed until Jan.'08 as I run into that date. I think it was NSW that I didn't have installed until Jan. and had to get help with that.

My question is I would like to upgrade to NIS '09 . But I read this:

If you DO NOT use any other Norton products, go to Windows Add-Remove Programs and if present, uninstall Symantec LIve Update and Symantec Live Update Notifier.  These are not required for 2009, but they may be required for other Norton Products such as 360, NSW, etc.

I have tried to uninstall: Control Panel>Add/Delete Programs, I can't seem to uninstall. I'd like to use Norton Removal Tool  but do not want to lose anything that works with NSW. Thinking of  upgrading  NSW v.11.0 to NSW ver.12.0 is this possible and if so how? Thinking if I upgrading both as it may help my problem.

I may be beating a dead horse here. Please advise. Thank you.

What?

I have over 365 days left on subscription. So I thought I could up grade to NIS 09. Or maybe both, NIS and NSW. I was just stating as to who had wrote the post I had put in my post. Sorry for the confusion.

In a post today Reese A, a Norton Staffer, has said that if you plan to combine NIS and NSW he recommends only using NSW Basic Edition so you are OK on that.

But NSW still uses the Symantec Live Update Utility that is used by NIS 2008 and not by NIS 2009 so you do not want to remove LiveUpdate if you go to update to NIS 2009.

With time left on your NIS2008 subscription you should have no problems with NIS2009 and a subscription. Make sure for simplicity that the KEY is recorded in Norton Account then NIS2009 will either get it automatically or will give you the opportunity to tell it Use an Existing KEY.

<< I have tried to uninstall: Control Panel>Add/Delete Programs, I can't seem to uninstall.  >>

For clarity -- what did you try to uninstall? NIS 2008 or ??

I am not absolutely certain whether NSW offers the same free upgrade to the newer version using your existing subscription but in any case I would do one thing at a time unless you are forced to use the NRT. I'll come back on the NSW upgrade after checking.

- Are you Upgrading using your Current Subscription or have you bought a Fresh N.I.S. 2009 Version Disc/Download?  If it is the former, follow the instructions below.

- Since there is no Subcription, i.e. Days Remaining, you would have to Buy the Latest Norton SystemWorks; not sure about Standard or Premier, although, I think you would have to Buy the Latest Norton SystemWorks Standard-Premier.

Upgrading instructions for Norton 2006 Products and Later:

01. Select your Product and Version, from the Web Link (above).

02. Save the Download on your Desktop.

03. Save your Product Key (www.mynortonaccount.com).

04. Go to Add/Remove.

05. Locate "Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation)" and click on "Remove".

06. Follow the instrctions and, when asked to, re-start your computer.

07. Locate to Add/Remove upon start-up.

08. Click on LiveUpdate and "Remove" and any other LiveUpdate.

09. If requested, re-start your computer.

10. Double-click on the Saved N.I.S./N.AV. File on your Desktop.

11. Follow the instructions.

12. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus and "Run [Norton] LiveUpdate" manually.

13. It is now Safe to Connect to the Internet again.

14. If you notice things not running right with N.I.S. 2009/N.AV. 2009, it may be a bug; please Post them here [in the Forum].

15. If you have Other Norton Products, then you can re-install LiveUpdate, or, if you have Used the N.R.T., you can re-install your Other Norton Product(s); if you do not have the Disc, then you can re-download it via the Trailware. Norton SystemWorks users have had a "Patch" Released so that Updates are received through Norton LiveUpdate, i.e. your Norton Internet Security 2009 Product.

16. If you have problems un-installing/installing, then use the Norton Removal Tool.

I put too  much info in my post. I have NIS 08 and NSW 08. Subsciption is current with over 365 days. I think I'm repeating myself?

See my post to you here. I’ve asked a Norton Staffer to confirm about taking over the NSW 2008 subscription when installing NSW2009 if you decide to do that.

I am not absolutely certain whether NSW offers the same free upgrade to the newer version using your existing subscription but in any case I would do one thing at a time unless you are forced to use the NRT. I'll come back on the NSW upgrade after checking.

NSW2008 Basic does not seem to have a successor

NSW2008 Standard and Premium both have successors (called version 12) and will upgrade for free if your subscription is still active.  I haven't tested standard, but the Premium edition works with NIS2009 with no problems (just remember to run Live Update, which will remove the Protection Center component).

Norton SystemWorks™ Basic Edition 12.0 …

I would Remove all LiveUpdate Components to aviod Issues with N.I.S. 2009, Norton LiveUpdate; writing from experience here.

I did indeed try to uninstall only NIS. Add yes again, the key is in my norton account, for both.

In your first message you said:

<< I have tried to uninstall: Control Panel>Add/Delete Programs, I can't seem to uninstall. >>

Can you tell us what happened when you tried -- did you get any error messages? If so exactly what did they say? Have you tried again?

You could also go into the Programs / Norton Internet Security menu and click on the Uninstall there although that is what Add/Remove Programs calls when you use that. But it is worth trying.

If none of that works you have two choices I can think of:

  1. Use Norton Removal Tool and put up with the consequences of deleting both NIS and NSW
  2. Reinstall NIS2008 from your existing media or installation file if you have that still. Sometimes this will correct a corrupt file that is stopping uninstall from working.

Let us know how you get on and what you decide to do.

huwyngr,

<<Can you tell us what happened when you tried -- did you get any error messages? If so exactly what did they say? Have you tried

again?>>

I clicked on uninstall for NIS and at first it ran looked like "installing files" and then stopped. Why would it be installing when I'm trying to uninstall?

I don't know why except that when you uninstall Norton and some other products even in Remove Programs they start of by seeming to go in the wrong direction.

But if it stopped then it sounds as if something is messed up.

Are you game to try the Reinstall NIS2008 to see if it clears up its own mess?

Huwyngr, I know it’s listed.  Sorry, I misspoke myself.  But watch what happens when you go to the product update center and see if there is an update for NSW 2008 Basic Edition.  You get a big “sorry, Bud!”

I didn't get any Sorry message there -- it offered me N360 .....

Have you tried:  Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition 12.0 Upgrade -- Buy download

I would not rule out a system glitch.

No, I got the same screen you did:  an offer to sell me Norton 360, not a free upgrade.

However, the issue has been resolved.  A client wanted NSW, so I ordered him the basic 2009 (a perfect match for NIS 2009), then tried the installer on my computer with my NSW basic 2008 activation key.  It did what it was supposed and accepted it.

Now I can report back to you on NSW 2009 basic.

For the most part, NSW 2009 is the same as NSW 2008.  The changes are mostly cosmetic.

Here is what you get.

  • Go Back is no longer part of the package.  [So if Go Back is important to you, keep NSW 2008.]
  • There is no conflict with NIS 2009.
  • There is a separate Live Update for NSW, distinct from the one for NSW.
  • The initial display screen is dramatically different in color and slightly in appearance from 2008.
  • The utilities all appear to be the same except there seem to be a few extra system information/monitoring tools.
  • WinDoctor starts with the identical splash screen and displays an identical screen after loading.  However, when I ran the program after installing, it appeared to be more aggressive in registry checking.  It found about 30 entries when immediately before the installation, I had it down to zero.  And, before it asks, most of the entries had nothing to do with Norton products, so they weren't the result of the installation.
  • I've tried a couple of reboots and loading a lot of programs and running multiple Live Updates alternating NSW with NIS.  No crashes, no BSOD's, no slowdowns.

Any questions?

Sorry took so long BUT, I have been trying to get on the internet for over 6hrs. I know it is the update of NIS 09, as everything was fine up to that point. I WAS able to uninstall NIS 08. Thank you. I don't know why it worked that time and not the others.

I also was unable to log off and several NOT RESPONDING popped up. like I said I really was unable to do much. I even tried Restart, that took me to a blank blue page, that would not go away. Had to force a cold boot. Logged on and now I'm able to get on line. What I'm wondering is should I uninstall NIS 09 and reinstall since I've had this problem?

So that I understand correctly -- you did end up installing NSW Basic V12 (=2009)?

Thanks for the information about it -- I'm not the interested party except in general terms. I've just been trying to answer questions!
