Upgrade to NAV2008 from NAV2006 - preinstall scan taking over 4.5 hours. Is something wrong?

I've upgraded to Windows XP SP3 and LiveUpdates were getting slower and slower to finally connect to the Norton website to get file updates.  Eventually, I decided I would install the upgrade to NAV2008.  Downloaded it successfully, and was asked if I wanted a system scan prior to installation (recommended).  I accepted that choice and this machine seems to be taking FOREVER to accomplish a scan.  The system is usable.  Other programs can be run.  I fear that I am without any protection, while this is between uninstalling or suppressing the operation of the older version and the installation of the newer version.  Windows Manager indicates that the program is running, but I wonder.  During this system scan, there are no file names whizzing by, so I can't tell where on the hard disk the program may be scanning and there are no numbers to indicate how many files have been scanned.  There is just a decorative animated bar that is moving from left to right.  I have no idea whether the program is really running or just in a suspended state.  The hard disk flickers occasionally.  I don't know if the scan is being VERY slow, or the flicker is from file accesses having nothing to do with the scan.

Abort the install, restart your PC, then run the Norton Removal Tool SYMNRT http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 . Then try the install again.

Good luck!

ps After you have run the Removal Tool, check in Add/Remove Programs to make sure Symantec Live Update is removed, if it is still there, uninstall it prior to your NIS 2008 install (It may be corrupt which could be causing the earlier problems).
