Upgrade to NIS 2011 causing fatal Windows 7 errors

I've tried to upgrade to NIS 2011 twice and both times the attempt has resulted in instability followed by startup failure on re-boot. And by try I mean the thing has nagged me for weeks and then installed itself.  Each attempt has ended in Windows startup repair taking control and rolling my system back to a pre-upgrade state.  Is there a workaround for this, or a way to keep that particular bit of code poisen out of my automatic updates?

DETAILS:

current NIS version 16.8.0.41

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

AMD athalon 64 X2 processor

4 GB memory
