Upgraded to NIS 2012 - lost access to internet

Yesterday I upgraded from 2011 to 2012 (Win7 Pro 64bit).  It seemed to go fine and after rebooting Liveupdate worked.  After rebooting again I had lost all internet access.  POP email wouldn't work and although my various browsers seemed to find a web site no data was downloaded.  I rebooted again (!) but no different.  Perhaps foolishly I restored the system to 3 days previous.  That worked fine and internet access was restored, but NIS2011 would not start - no errors, just nothing happened.  I contacted Symantec online and established a chat session.  He suggested re-loading 2012 which he did, but once again after restart no internet so the session then failed.  I have removed 2012 reinstalled 2011 via my original download manager from Jan 2011 and all now seems fine.  But... what was the problem and how might I re-try installing 2012?  Sorry this is a bit rambling ...:smileyhappy:

Hi Imacri,

Thanks for the advice.  I have only had NIS on this machine (as far as I know - various products seem to try to 'sneak' things in if you don't spot them  :smileywink:)  Since I posted, I did have an error message with 2011 - 3040 40028 I think.  The online advice was to use the removal tool if the error re-appears.  I will take your advice and use it and then re-try 2012.  I will report back tomorrow - thanks again.

All done fine now as per instructions :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks again.

Hi baldeagleuk:

Glad to hear you got your Internet working again.

This type of problem works in both directions.  Kevin_O posted here that he lost his Internet connection after installing Kaspersky Internet Security, and he had to wipe the remnants of a 60-day trial version of NIS off his system with the Norton Removal Tool before Kaspersky would work properly.

The services for these security programs "hook" themselves into the operating system, and if they aren't shut down and uninstalled in an orderly fashion from the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs for XP; Programs and Features for Vista and Win 7) and wiped off the hard drive with a removal tool it can sometimes result in very odd behaviour, up to and including damage to Windows system files (see Phil_D's post here).

A couple of weeks after upgrading to Norton Internet Security 2012 Norton Confidential Plug-in crashed.

I used NRnR.exe and after restart I couldn't open my browsers so i did a complete system scan but Windows Vista 64 Crashed.

I restarted and

Firefox 8.0 and Internet Explorer 9 still will not open even after using NRnR.exe. I only got Chrome working by disabling Norton Confidential Plug-in, but I can not get the options to open for IE9 and Firefox won't open at all.

I only use Norton products on my computer.

Big problem I cannot open Norton Internet Security. So I cannot save Identiy safe info !

Hi khinton25:

Have your tried starting your computer in Safe Mode?  If not, re-boot your computer and press the F8 key continually (e.g., every second or so) before Windows starts.  This will interrupt the normal boot process and give you access to the Windows advanced boot menu where you can select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking  which will load the minimum Windows drivers and services necessary to run your computer.

First start your computer in Safe Mode and then see if you can launch NIS 2012 from the Start menu and back up your Idenitity Safe data.  Note that this step is only necessary if you use NIS to store your passwords and manage your personal data on the web.

If that works, re-start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and use your Chrome browser to download the necessary files to perform a clean re-install of NIS 2012 as instructed here.  Before performing the clean re-install please read my comments in message # 2 and let us know if you've had any other security software from another manufacturer (e.g., McAfee, AVG, etc.) installed on your computer that may be interfering with your NIS 2012 installation.

I was unable to save my passwords because I couldn't open Norton.

But even after I removed Norton and restarted then installed Norton, restarted computer, my passwords were still there!

My browsers are working again! Hope this doesn't jinx it.

Good Answer wish i had seen it before. But passwords were not lost even after using removal tool!

Kudos and thanks for the response, I may need to use safemode next time Norton messes up!

HI khinton25:

Glad to hear your Internet connection is working again.

In theory, the Norton Removal Tool should not remove static (e.g., .dat, .txt) files containing your previous configuration settings and Identity Safe data from your hard drive if you answer "yes" when asked if you will be re-installing your Norton product (see RichD's comments here), but we normally recommend that users back up their Identity Safe data manually before a clean re-install just in case something goes wrong (which it does on occasion).  In your case it sounds like everything worked as designed and the fresh re-install was able to recover your Idenitiy Safe data.
