Upnp (Universal Plug n Play)

I have a UPnP inhibit radio button in my broadband router.

Question:-

If I inhibit UpnP, what will I loose; hopefully, not my Norton ?

Appreciated. AK

Hi photo762,

UPnP allows applications, such as games, on your computer to open the ports they need in the router without having to bother the user.  Everything is taken care of automatically and the user is not even notified when the router settings change.  This is very convenient, but if malware gets on your system it will be able to do the same thing.  Of course, at that point you are already infected, but there is still some security benefit in preventing the malware from communicating through holes it has created in your router without your knowledge.  For this reason you are arguably somewhat safer by disabling UPnP in the router.  It will not adversly affect Norton or anything else.
