Does Symantec/Norton have a USB AntiVirus program? I'm not talking about scanning a USB drive when it is inserted into my PC which has Norton AntiVirus installed. I'm looking for an app that lives on the USB drive itself and scans the USB drive to ensure the host PC does not plant a virus and that files copied over are virus free. McAfee's has McAfee VirusScan USB available that does this. But it requires a U3 compliant drive, which I I believe is a dead standard. Plus I'd like to see if Norton's has something similar before I buy that. I didn't find anything on the Norton Website... But wanted to make sure I didn't just miss it.
I haven’t heard of a facility from norton that is on a USB drive even if it was available Norton does not fully scan zipped files if the are large over 2gb if a file like this has something malicious on it when it is unzipped Norton’s auto-protect will block it.
Have you considered purchasing a USB drive and using this drive for loading new data from other computers then scanning with your computer if it comes up clean transfer the data to your computer and wiping the USB for the next data transfer.
Thanks for the reply intsec. I'll take a read through the link you sent.
I'll give some thought to your idea of using a dedicated transfer thumb drive and see if I can make that work. My use case is that I mentor students in software development for the US First Robotics Competition. We're often in a no internet access environment and have to rely on the sneakernet a lot. So my USB drive is in and out of a lot of PCs. I do my best to scan it when putting it back in my PC. But it'd be nice to have something that scans when someone places a file on it. It would not only protect me, but let me (and the student) know which is the infected PC if a virus shows up.
Please see JohnDissident's comments here about a workaround for performing a Norton scan on a USB drive when it is inserted into a computer using the Windows Autorun feature. This workaround, however, doesn't provide constant real-time protection for your USB like McAfee VirusScan USB.
I've never used it, but the Norton Bootable Recovery Toolis included on the product CD if you purchase a retail version of a Norton product and it is designed to recover a computer that is infected with viruses and other security threats. Norton also provides a wizard that allows you to create a bootable CD, DVD or USB that includes the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, but in order to use this recovery tool on the bootable media you need the product (registration) key that comes with your purchased Norton product.
