USB question

Since installing Norton 360,  programs cannot recognize my USB ports or hub. How can I change this or I will have to give up on Norton 360?

Thank you for your response.  To answer your questions: Norton 360 Ver. 6.2.1.5, Windows 7 with all of the service packs, 64 bit, Mozilla Firefox browser, I did check the Device Manager and all of the ports are working - I have USB ports on the computer itself and also a hub and problem applies to all.  I hope this helps and I very much appreciate your help.  Jim Liesener

Thanks Jim,

I don't know N 360 well enough to make suggestions on what to look at.so hang on for some of the regulars who use it.

You have not used any of the cleanup or registry fixing functions of N 360 have you? Those are often the cause of system faults.

What sort of application and function are you trying that does not work?

Do you get any specific error messages?

Have you looked in Event Viewer to see what it flags when you try to use something involving the hub?

If you have a printer attached to USB does it work OK?

The more background you can give the better the chances of helping you ....

Thanks.  I have not used the cleanup or registry fixing functions.  One of the programs that will not upload from my camera using the usb port OR usb port on my computer is Picasa3. I have not seen any specific error messages.  I looked in the Event Viewer and see a few things listed but I don't see any flags OR I don't know how to look for them.  I do not have a printer attached via a USB port.  The Device Manager seems to indicate that all of the ports are working.  I wish I could be more helpful here.  I really appreciate your effort to help me.  Thanks.  Jim Liesener

I hooked up a printer to a UsB port and tried to print and it worked.  Does this help.  Jim

JIm,

<< One of the programs that will not upload from my camera using the usb port OR usb port on my computer is Picasa3. >>

Is the problem only with the camera, or with other things plugged into USB?

I've come across, not here but over on Compuserve where they have a good Photography Forum, cases where this does happen with specific cameras. Do you by any chance have a Canon since this is one that I remember.

When you say << programs that will not upload from my camera >> I take it you mean that Picasa will not download images from the camera memory card via a USB cable from the computer to the camera. One work around for this is to use a USB card reader. These are very cheap, have multiple different slots for different camera cards and plug into USB on the PC. Useful if you are traveling and want to download.

But that's a workaround.

For a fix you might check with the camera website and see if there are any firmware updates -- that's what fixed the Canon problem.

Thanks but I have tried a number of cameras with the same result. I am thinking of getting rid of my new Norton 360 and going back to Norton Internet Security where I had no trouble (I had been running Picaso3 as well as other things via the USB ports earlier in the day)  or go to some other company.  I didn't have any problem at all until the Norton representative removed my Norton Internet Security program and installed the Norton 360.  This is really a strange problem but looks like others have also had problems with Norton 360 and USB connections.  I appreciate your efforts.  Jim

Jim,

You didn't mention that background. Why was the change made?

Let us know if we can help with the move back to NIS -- I prefer it myself.

I'd suggest running the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of any differences between the two products.

With that history of a change made by a Norton representative (was it due to a problem?) you might be able to get your subscription transferred from N 360 to NIS if you ask the Norton OnLine Support Team via the CHAT route as below. This uses the computer keyboard not your phone. They are very helpful and I've heard of this happening.

To contact customer support Click on this link https://www.norton.com/chat   and work on from there.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Since installing Norton 360,  programs cannot recognize my USB ports or hub. How can I change this or I will have to give up on Norton 360?

Thank you so much for your help.  I will follow your suggestion and I will let you know what happens.  Jim

Hugh,

Before getting rid of Norton 360 as we discussed, I thought I would take one more look at the Device Manager etc.  I checked all of the USB devices and they were working and then I saw a category PORTABLE DEVICES and when I hooked up my two cameras and turned them on they showed up under Portable Devices.  When I clicked on each of the cameras, I got the following message: "Windows cannot start device because its configuration (in registry) is incomplete or damaged (Code 19)"

I thought I would tell you about this just in case this could provide a clue to what the problem is and if it might be a registry contamination when Norton 360 was installed.  I am sorry to bother you again but I would be very interested in what you think of this.  Thanks.  Jim

Jim,

That could tie in with your camera (do you have any other USB portable devices?).

A Google on [ Picasa USB Problems ] leads to this http://support.google.com/picasa/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=11154 where if you say that Windows sees your hardware try reinstalling Picasa since that fixes most problems

I just did a Google on [ "Windows cannot start device configuration incomplete or damaged Code19 ] and there are plenty of results of which one of the most complete would seem to be:

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/code-19-error.htm

SInce it involves registry errors and you did not run the cleanup/registry fixer stuff I don't know what might have caused it.

I think I'd try #4 on the list and if that does not fix it then #3 since Upper Lower FIlters is known to have arisen when uninstalling Norton 360 although in your case it was NIS that Norton uninstalled.

However if you definitely want to go to NIS then I'd uninstall N 360 and install NIS and see if the trouble is still there and if it is look at #4 and #3

Hugh,

I went into Device Manager and turned on my two cameras and found where they were listed under Portable Devices.  I then unstalled both of them and turned them off and then turned them back on again one by one and reinstalled them.  And BEHOLD, I can now download from both cameras without difficulty.  I am so relieved but I am also very appreciative for your help and consultation.  I hope that this may help to inform your assistance with someone else.  Obviously these two drivers or whatever were damaged in the removal of Norton Internet Security and/or the installation of Norton 360.  This is a lot better than getting rid of Norton 360 and reinstalling Norton Internet Security and all of the attendant problems with that.  Thank you so much.  Jim

I'm glad you found the error message that led to the solution.

You never did explain why NIS was removed by Norton support .... was it because you wanted to go to N 360 or because of a technical problem?

Since it would seem that Picasa does have a problem with USB devices I would not assume too much.

Hugh,

I changed because I wanted to change over to Norton 360 (the additional features and positive reviews).  I hope I don't have more problems with Picasa but I have used it for a long time and this is the first time I had a problem.  I really appreciate your doing the research that you did for me.  I learned a lot through this (some good and some bad) but I also learned to appreciate again the value of users helping users.  Thanks.  Jim

Jim,

Thanks for rounding out the story. I understand better now; I thought you'd had a problem that support solved by making the change.

You know where to find us ....

BTW You may like to try that link to the Photography Forum on Compuserve. All you need if you want to log in to post is an AIM name and password .... there's no charge. There's a lot of terrific help there on hardware and on software eg photo editing and so on. Some great examples get posted there too.

Hugh,

A very interesting suggestion.  Thanks again.  Jim
