Using Mozilla? I use IE

Hello, peeps.

I was just having a look at my stats and it said the last browser I logged in on was Mozilla /5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0)

You know I'm not the most tech savvy ghost, so was just wondering if anyone could explain to me what's going on here.. as I don't use Mozilla on my lappy.  Can only find it in registry and I'm not going to start messing about with that.

Thank you :)

Hi ghosty,

This is called a user-agent string, and the browser you are using is Internet Explorer 9 (MSIE 9.0).  The Mozilla reference is a carry-over from the time when the Netscape browser was dominant and identified itself to websites as "Mozilla."  In order to work on sites with content designed for Netscape, early versions of Microsoft's upstart IE spoofed the Mozilla designation.  So the word "Mozilla" essentially tells a website that IE is mozilla-compatible.  The convention stuck, even though it doesn't actually have much relevance today.

Really? Well I never! Thank you for clearing that up for me.  I know I will have some questions about it rattling around in my head, but not today! Not with a head that feels like cotton wool.. thanks to a clingy cold!

Thanks again.. off to the kudos button I go.. hi ho hi ho.

God! Why does everything have to be so complicated!

Thank you, Turbo.

Good explanation from SOJ. After awhile, I started ignoring the browser stats. It always list my logins with Mozilla, Apple (even though I've never had a Mac), Safari and Chrome.

Chrome is the only one that is technically correct. I've never been to this website with any other browser, but I see what SOJ means.
