Using NIS 2009 With Automatic Program Control Disabled

Just a short question. I'm using the trial version of NIS 2009 that came with a new computer, and I'm considering subscribing. But before I do, I'd like to know if it's very easy to get a little more control over program control.

For example, one of the things that I like about another firewall that I use regularly, is that I can set it to ask me every time a program tries to access the internet. This is very useful for programs like Windows Media Player, which I want to access the web some of the time, but not every time I open the program.

So, I'm worried about two things: If I turn Automatic Program Control off, will it lose all of the settings I've already made forever... or will it remember my settings if I turn it back on? And also, is there an "ask me every time" option for program access in the firewall? I wouldn't want to allow or block access once, and have it become a permanent setting.

I know this sounds kind of stupid. I'm just afraid to tinker with the software settings too much, until I understand them a little better. Thanks.
