Hello @Sandra_L.Walters
Welcome to the Norton Community!
Troubleshooting slow Internet connectivity issues with Norton VPN
Step 1: Change Your iOS Norton Protocol to WireGuard
Switching to WireGuard will drastically improve your speeds and help the VPN stay connected when you walk out the door.
Open the Norton VPN (or Norton 360 ) app on your iPhone.
Tap the Settings (Gear Icon) in the top-right corner.
Select Advanced Settings .
Tap on WireGuard to select
(Note: If you are ever on a highly restrictive public Wi-Fi network that blocks WireGuard, go back to this screen and select Mimic , which is Norton’s custom protocol designed to bypass network blocks).
Step 2: The “Airplane Mode” Reset
Because iOS sometimes “freezes” the data connection when transitioning from Wi-Fi to Cellular with a VPN running, use this quick reset trick if your internet completely cuts out when leaving the house:
Swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone screen to open the Control Center .
Tap the Airplane icon to turn it on.
Wait 10 seconds .
Tap the Airplane icon again to turn it off.
This forces your iPhone to drop the frozen Wi-Fi handoff and reconnect cleanly to your mobile data network.
Step 3: Refresh the iOS VPN Profile
If the app still refuses to work on cellular data, your Apple network profile might be glitched. Deleting and re-adding it takes less than a minute:
Open your iPhone’s main Settings app.
Go to General > VPN & Device Management .
Tap the “i” icon next to Norton VPN and select Delete VPN Profile .
Re-open your Norton app , try to turn the VPN on, and tap Allow when iOS asks for permission to reinstall the profile.
Step 1: Change the Protocol to WireGuard on Mac
Just like on mobile, changing your VPN engine to WireGuard will instantly boost your speeds and make the Mac more stable when switching networks.
Open the Norton Secure VPN app on your Mac.
Click on the Settings (Gear Icon) in the left sidebar or top menu.
Select the VPN Protocol tab.
Click on WireGuard to select it.
Step 2: Fix macOS Network Permissions
Sometimes your Mac’s built-in firewall blocks Norton when you connect to a new network. Giving Norton a clean slate usually fixes this:
Click the Apple Menu () in the top left corner and open System Settings .
Go to VPN (or Network > VPN on older macOS versions).
Look for Norton Secure VPN in the list.
Click the “i” (Information) icon next to it, turn it off, and then turn it back on to refresh the connection profile.
Step 3: Turn Off Norton’s “Kill Switch” Temporarily
Norton features a “Kill Switch” that blocks all internet access if the VPN connection drops even for a split second. While safe, it often freezes your Mac’s internet completely when you disconnect from your home Wi-Fi instead of letting it seamlessly jump to another network.
Open your Norton Secure VPN app.
Go to Settings .
Locate Kill Switch .
Toggle it Off and see if your internet returns to normal when changing networks.
If You Decide to Switch to NordVPN
If Norton continues to freeze up on your Mac, it is a known limitation of how their desktop software interacts with macOS network routing. If you want to switch to a dedicated provider, NordVPN offers a highly rated, lightweight app specifically optimized for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3 chips) and Intel Macs alike.
