Utilities refuses to repair registry problem

After a scan I get one problem ignored and thus not repaired.  Scan results shows a red bar and says:

High Priority: Highlighted value is missing or invalid

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{CEF63746-AD34-42D0-9138-39D83ECB77CB}\1

(default)=%ProgramFiles%\Virtual PC\

I have run the scan three times and get the same result.

John

Are you running the scan while VIrtual PC is running?  If not, then choose to exclude it from future scans.  Sometimes you'll run into items that aren't correctly identified as needing to be changed or are unable to be changed due to the design of another product.  Virtual PC in this case.

Hi JohnLumb,

If you are not sure how to add exclusions to Norton Utilities, please see this post for details on how to exclude this item from future scans.

Hope this helps.

Virtual PC is hibernating.  There does not seem to be an actual OFF option.

About the Exclusions response:   Why not fix the problem instead of having Utilities ignore it?  Is this Registry error of no consequence?

Hi John,

When you click Repair, does it indicate that it was successful and then the same error comes back later? Or does it say it failed to do the repair initially?

If it fails to do the repair initially, then NU is probably being blocked from being able to make the change. Similarly if it does do the repair and then sometime later the same error comes back would be an indication that the software in charge of that key is putting the same entry back in.

I had one case where one particular key would be found repeatedly over time. So what I did is scan and do the repair followed immediately by another scan. The second scan did not show the error but came back a day later and it was back again. There was no choice in this case except to have it ignored going forward.

A bug could cause this but failing to be able to repair could also simply mean that NU is not being allowed to make the change.

Having to ignore a key like this is not going to cause any problems for your system. I would be more concerned if the same problem was happening on many different keys.

On my system I only ever had to ignore the one key and all other corretions that NU has had to make do not come back.

Hope this helps.

NU fails to repair.  I can run it.  It will find five problems and repair four. I run NU three more times and now it finds just the one problem and fails to repair it each time..

Hi John,

Thanks very much for the update.

As I mentioned there might be some things NU is being blocked or is not able to repair. This is a benign registry error and will not cause your system any harm.

Being a software engineer I can tell you that virtually no system registry is 100% free of minor errors such as this. NU is a valuable tool to assist in minimizing those errors but it will never be able to correct 100%.

I would suggest setting the exclusion as outlined earlier so that NU will not constantly tell you that your system health is low because of an unresolved error.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Allen

Allen,

Thank you.
