Version 24 has removed local backup

Hi. New to the forum and not very tech-savvy. Two days ago I downloaded an update to the virus and spyware definitions, as they call it, which I do just about every week. This week there was an update to the program itself, version 24.10.9535.1052. It completely f****d (pardon the language) my PC to the point where Windows wouldn’t start and automatic repair mode could not fix the issue. I contacted Norton support who wanted no part of it because the problem was Windows although they offered to transfer me to their ‘superior’ support team provided I paid a fee. I had some options when automatic repair mode didn’t work so I rolled back to the latest restore point which was just before the Norton update was installed. It removed the update and all is now fine again. Current version is 22.24.8.36. Another call to Norton support got nowhere. I was hoping they would accept that their update was to blame and do something about it. They are not interested in ‘a Windows problem’. I’m not sure I want the program update if the backup function has been changed as I also do not want to backup to the cloud. Is it possible to update the virus and spyware definitions but not the program? From other posts on here it seems it’s possible but the only option I have is to run the whole update.
