Very disappointed in service and my computer got a virus

I did not remove the Norton that was previously installed.  I signed into my Norton account and downloaded NIS 2009 by choosing it from the list of options Norton has because my yearly subscription was up.  Thanks MO!

Ok,That may not be too bad as I know I installed NIS2009 over NIS2008 without problems.I would suggest try what Stu suggested as he is more expert at this .

I hope the information you have provided thus far can give someone insight into what might have happened. And others on this forum may be able to help you more. Can you remember what the other Norton was that was installed?? I'm asking these questions as they may give clues to your problem .Are you sure you can not remember the Virus name etc.

Hey jc

u told that when u sign in using safe mode u get shut down immediately.

Now, pls confirm which account u used for signing in, means r u signing in ur usual account or administrator account.

If u r using ur own account, then try logging in using admin account.

Pls tell if it helps.

I do not know if I can run anything off of an external source (ie. USB).  But I would think that if I have no access at all to my computer that I wouldn’t be able to access a USB drive without being signed in or in DOS mode.  Please let me know what you think.

Hey MO!  Thanks for the help.  As for all the info. I can give is this:

NIS PRIMARY DOWNLOAD = Downloaded/installed NIS 2009 (over NIS 2008)

NIS SECONDARY DOWNLOAD = Norton Systems Works Basic 12.0 Upload was also downloaded and installed

COMPUTER = Toshiba Satellite that has Windows XP and I am not sure of the service pack

VIRUS = Don't know the Virus name

ISSUES = Cannot sign onto my computer through either the ADMINISTRATOR or OWNER accounts.  When signing on to either account the following happenings:

logging on

saving your settings

logging off

I hope this helps.

Hey Gupta.  I cannot sign into either the Adminstrator Account or my personal/owner account.  Please see my response to MO’s note.  Hope this helps.

Have you attempted to get into your computer using your Xp install disc?  I’m sorry if I’m not seeing that somewhere.  You may be able to get into safe mode from there or to Recovery.  If you can, have the anti malware programs that Stu mentioned ready to go.

<< ISSUES = Cannot sign onto my computer through either the ADMINISTRATOR or OWNER accounts.  >>

Sometimes caused by corrupted accounts. C an you get into anywhere from where you can access Control Panel / User Accounts and create a new account? If so try this.

If this works there is a way of transferring all the settings from the "corrupted account" into the new one so you don't lose those settings.

I have put the disc in to run it and nothing happens.  You can hear it run as with any disk placed in the drive, but nothing happens afterwards.  This is starting to be so depressing :smileysad:  it’s like no one can’t get me signed on from anywhere.  A guy in my IT department at work thinks he can help, but I don’t want to be a nuissance to him or feel like I owe him big time if I let him take it to work on it…I hope someone can help me on here…

I am not quite sure of what you mean by “get into anywhere”…where else would I be able to do this?  I can press <F8> and go into safe mode, but I still cannot sign onto either administrator or personal account, is there something that I can do to sign on “behind the scenes” or something in DOS area?

I was not sure from when you said that you could not log in to what extent you could access the PC.

If you can get into Safe Mode can you access Control Panel / User Accounts and create a test account. Then reboot and see if you can log in via that test account.

If you can then you can check for malware etc? And if you can clean up then I can check out how you "transfer" into the test account and rename it.

Just a longshot since you seemed stymied.

Stymied...good word!  By pressing <F8> and the black screen comes up with:

SAFE MODE - goes to the sign in screen for Administrator, My Account, Guest --none of which I can sign into  :smileysad:

SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING

SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT

ENABLE BOOT LOGGING

ENABLE VGA MODE

LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION (YOUR MOST RECENT SETTINGS THAT WORKED) - tried this and it does nothing

DIRECTORY SERVICES RESTORE MODE (WINDOWS DOMAIN CONTROLLERS ONLY)

DEBUGGING MODE - tried clicking on this just to see what it is and my computer froze and I had to re-start

DISABLE AUTOMATIC RESTART ON SYSTEM FAILURE

START WINDOWS NORMALLY

REBOOT

RETURN TO OS CHOICES MENU

So, what do I do here?  I can select any of the above choices but when I get to the sign on screen I can't go any further.  This is where it Signs on, Signs off, Saves settings, and goes back to sign on screen.

Thanks!!

Only 1 way left, disconnect ur hdd and connect it to othe healthy pc as secondary drive, use antiviruses and malwarebytes from healthy comp to scan the infected drive.

There is maybe one more possibility, although Rohit1gupta is probably accurate.  This is a combination boot disc and antivirus that may be successful in making enough changes to allow you to get into your machine.  It was recommended by Quads to assist in a Brastk infection.  We don't know what your machine is infected with, or if it is more a matter of conflicting antivirus programs.  You can download it here, burn it to a disc and attempt to boot your machine and run the scanner.

Let us know if you have any success.

Frustrating! Almost discombobulating .... ?

I can add two longshots to the others -- is your log on password protectedin the normal Windows way? If so then perhaps the password has become corrupted.

I think there is a way with NT to delete or bypass the login password -- not a BIOS password -- so how about trying to utilize that to remove the password protection and see if that permits logging in.

I don't have the procedure for this at my fingertips but I can find it if no-one else jumps in with it.

The second is really only for systems where you have the normal full installation disk for XP or VISTA -- and that is to run the Repair function for Windows. In XP you can however try

START / Run / sfc /now

[that sfc is a command and /now is a "switch" to tell it to do it now! There is one space between the two statements]

This deals with corrupted and missing individual system files and normally it will ask you to insert the XP disk for it to pull files off, but with laptops like Toshiba that has the XP recovery on the hard drive or on a disk which is not the same but is an image of the hard drive, as you probably know.

Check your manual to see if it says anything about this. sfc = System FIle Configuration.

With VISTA and a normal installation disk it's even more powerful and simple since you just boot up to the installation DVD and select Repair on a menu and it will check the Windows installation and try to repair it.

I hope you have backups of your personal files since the ultimate solution is to use the Toshiba Recovery system to get back to factory condition. However this would destroy all your personal files and before doing that I think someone suggested removing the drive from the laptop and connecting it to another computer to see if you can copy off your personal files.

This is not difficult to do on Toshibas normally and you can buy a harness from different sources that will enable you plug a hard drive into USB and access it. I have one I used a while ago when a family member had a problem with his laptop and this harness adapts to 2.5in laptop and 3.5 in desktop drives and to IDE & SATA as well as providing power for the drive

Hope that helps.
