Here's a recommendation from our Administrator in a thread about Vundo....
I would recommend scanning in Safe Mode to detect the malware. Additionally, at the bottom of every board is a list of Tags, and you should see a "malware" tag. That will direct you to all the malware issues on this Forum. Thanks!

Hang on for some more specific answers.
Cant for the life of me see this list of Tags. Err can you point me in the right direction please?
We're working on some changes with the forum at this time, but for a great resource in cleaning your system, I would recommend that you follow the steps listed in the How To Troubleshoot a Suspected Malware Infection announcement.
For your question about System Restore, Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. In past versions of Norton products, the folder was not excluded and customers would see many alerts on that folder, but no action could be taken to remove the threat.

Sorry about that -- they were when I last looked.<g> Search should still be working ...
I cannot scan using Norton 360 v2 in safe mode. I do not believe this is possible.
Hi Tony
I have fully read How To Troubleshoot a Suspected Malware Infection announcement. I would like to suggest that advanced users will find using autoruns (Microsoft) a much simpler and safer way to deal with the registry and other entries. I admit that I have not tried Antibot but I have tried Norton Security Scanner. As an aside the latter found an apparent trojan in a file that Norton 360 v2 does not see as infected. So again this is a problem. Norton security scanner deleted the file - with no way to recover.
OK, the problem here is not how to clean up the computer. In fact I doubt that Norton 360 can, and using another Norton tool is an admission surely that Norton 360 is deficient. The problem rather is that Norton 360 is not doing its job. A scan in safe mode is not possible but the point is, that even if it did work, Norton has to work in non-safe mode. The user has to rely that an infected file will be stopped as soon as it is opened (or copied or executed). Norton simply does not do that. Why is Norton 360 not detecting severe issues that for example OneCare is ? Its the answer to this, that I am looking for.
I'm also interested to get the answer as to why "System Volume Information" is excluded !
Notwithstanding the foregoing, I do appreciate all the responses
You are correct; scanning with Norton 360 v2 in safe mode is not an option.

Sorry about that mis-direction -- one learns all the time!
