Virus attacking Windows, Norton and external Harddrive.

Like most viruses I have no idea where it came from. I have the latest Norton Antivirus. I believe that I've gotten the virus off of my laptop computer harddrive, but since I use a portable harddrive I suspect that it's migrated onto it.

If I plug in my harddrive, I immediately get problems. I try to disable the harddirve while it's plugged in so I can scan it with Norton. However as soon as I do anything to do with the harddrive itself (accessing files, properties, etc) I'm immediately shut up, Windows becomes unresponsive and I have to restart and scan my laptop.I tried using a System Restore but it had no effect.

At one point I managed to clean my computer of the virus and start a scan on the harddrive but Norton only got to about 10,000 files scanned before completely freezing up and and becoming unresponsive. After that I went into the Norton Support and it downloaded a new Virus Definiition update but had no effect.

Whats more baffling is that whenever scanning my computer, I get no trace of anything that has an high or medium risk. I usually get Tracking Cookies, between 5 and 15 on average, nothing I'm too worried about. But scanning seems to help and Norton is some how containing the problem, I think.

If anyone has any insight then it'd be much appreciated. I'd really prefer not to have to wipe my harddrive as it is a 1TB and it's practically full. If I loose the data then I'd have wasted a lot of time and effort creating and downloading.
