Virus protection - auto protect off and won't come back on

Auto proetct is switched off, legend says 'at risk' and in 'settings' auto protect says 'error.' When I go into settings and configure on auto protect the suto protect box is unticked. When I tick it, it unticks again as soonas I press OK
