Virus that disables the keyboard at boot?

Hi all,

maybe someone can help me out as to whether or not I have a virus. I have searched the forum and googled for the symtoms but haven't found any answers yet.

at any rate my computer is pretty new, and at the moment has Win2003 installed with Norten AV.

once logged on it hangs every couple seconds or so, so that the mouse is frozen for one to 10 seconds then its good for another couple seconds and so on.  I used Run>MSconfig and turned off everything, I think it helped somewhat but did not solve the problem. I ran a AV scan (current virus definition) of my complete C: drive including memory and boot sector and so forth, but nothing was found.

I seem to remember this happening once before, maybe a year ago or more. back then I just reinstalled my computer and the world was ok again. This time, however, my keyboard seems to be disabled sortly after where i can enter setup but before where all drives are checked. Meaning during the boot process I can push "delete" to enter setup and everything is as it should be but after that for example when a Windows CD is in the drive and it displays "press any key to install from CD . . . . . . " no key strokes are recognised. or if I put in a Boot CD that boots automatically.... the environment is loaded but I have no keyboard or mouse to do anything. which means I cannot solve this using an Image. after the boot phase is "done" shortly before the Login screen, the keyboard is back up and running again and I can log on normally.

Funnier still, wenn I am logged on to Windows and I open up the setup from a windows CD here is what happens...

Windows 2003 - the splash screen hangs as soon as I click on any option (i.e. Install Windows 2003). I can close the window  normally but none of the links produce any effect other than the hourglass-

Windows XP - the "install windows XP" link in the splash screen is greyed out

Windows Vista - after clicking on "Instal windows Vista" it brings an error message something about no storage mediums being found, and the only option is to close the window.

In BIOS every thing is set correctly so that even an USB Keyboard should work during the boot phase... I have tried 3 different keyboards, (2 USB and even a PS2) all of which work on other computers, and I have another computer of exactly the same make and model and there I have my Keyboard during the boot.

does anyone have any ideas if or which virus this could be?

Thanks alot in advance.

Ana
