Vista 64 (Ultimate) Hangs When I Close Lid to Sleep Laptop

My computer used to go to sleep just fine before I used Norton (I was using a competitors Internet Security software). Now I've noticed that 8 out of 10 times I try to close the lid to put the laptop to sleep for transport to a meeting it just hangs with a blank screen. I've checked the event viewer and there's nothing obvious in there to say what went wrong. It simply says it failed to sleep and that it may be because the system hanged (DUH!) during the attempt. When this happens I'm forced to hold the power button to force a shut OFF (versus normal shutdown) or - in some cases, like today - removing the battery. I don't like the idea of abruptly cutting power to my system.

I've tried several different things (isolating them one at a time), from turning off wireless, to making sure no Office programs were running, to making sure Media Player wasn't running in the background. I even tried turning off the "Idle time" processes in Norton - or at least the ones that are accessible to the user.

In the end, I'm forced into an unpleasant conclusion. The simple fact is that this NEVER happened (even once in 7 months of ownership) until I installed Norton Internet Security 2010.  Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution (besides uninstalling Norton)?
