Does this relate to your other question? If so please do not start new threads but use reply.

I'll ask a Staffer to combine the two threads since that is more likely to be productive for help if you confirm this relates (and answer the question about versions.)

It is related in so far as I want to do it as part of my troubleshooting procedures and I had originally combined the two quesions into a single post.

However I thought it would be better to seperate them as the other topic is quite a specific question about the use of norton whereas the performance issue here could be related to almost anything.

OK I see your point -- I'll not ask for it to be moved ..... although that's not to say it won't be <g>

BUT your still have not said what version of Norton you are talking about? NIS or NAV nor what year.

2009 are totally different animals to anything Norton produced before.

The background to this is that I have a fairly new high performance PC that starts suffering immense performance problems within a couple of weeks of my activating the norton products that were bundled with it.

The first time this happend (about 6 weeks ago) the PC became so unresponsive I eventually had to restore it to factory settings.

I then used it for a few weeks without activating norton, about 2 weeks ago I activated norton and again in the last couple of days im hitting big performance problems in and around startup time.  Im very hard pressed to Identify what is going on, i usually run as a non admin account - symptoms include:

noticeably slower than normal logon time

very slow initial connections to the internet - in fact browsers become unuseable for some time after initial log in

windows itself is very slow - on one occasion the start menu would not show any icons for the first 5 minutes or so

these symptoms seem to ease some time after startup but are extremely disruptive.

What is the best way to approach this (note i have seen the standard response of defragmenting disk etc already - i seriously doubt that is the issue here).

I have Norton 360 on a year old laptop with a Core Duo T2520, and I have seen no performance issues. I would suggest running a:

  1. Disk Defrag. After installing programs a lot of files are created, thus creating a need for a disk defrag. Select Disk Optimization in Norton 360.
  2. Registry Defrag: You can try Auslogics BoostSpeed, which defrags the registry. I believe that N360 adds ~ 2000 keys to the registry, creating a need for defragmentation.
  3. Temp File Cleanup. Norton creates ~2000 temp files during installation. Run a Windows Temp File Cleanup under PC Tuneup. It should remove ~2000 files.

I am sorry; I thought that this thread was under Norton 360, however then I noticed that it was not! I highly recommend Auslogics SpeedBoost. It will clean your temp files, defrag your disk and registry. Let us know how it works out.
