Vista Security Center keeps reporting NIS 2010 is turned off

I have the most recent build of NIS 2010 (17.1.0.19). All LiveUpdate runs have verified product is up to date. No other security products have ever been installed on this machine. Upgraded from NIS 2009, which was (finally) running properly. Upgrade process seemed clean--i.e. no error messages or other glitches.

Vista's Security Center reports that NIS 2010 is turned off, even tho I can see NIS 2010 is running and NIS reports it is secure. Clicking "Turn on..." in Vista Security Center pops open the NIS 2010 GUI, but Vista still says it is turned off. Moreover, my HP MediaSmart server also says security is turned off for this machine.

Rebooting usually helps, but this is a pain. Also, NIS 2010 has intermittently begun exhibiting a behavior similar to one that plagued NIS 2009 for awhile: it turns itself off, and the Vista Sidebar widget just shows the continuously swirling circle. With NIS 2009, this problem was caused by a flaw in the Symantec Service Framework, and was cured by a patch. I have searched the KB, and can find no mention of either behavior.

Has anyone else been experiencing this? If so, is there a fix?

Also, there seem to be periods when I'm trying to do something on the computer, and it seems the system has frozen. If I wait, it usually responds (eventually), but this has started happening only after installing NIS 2010.

What's going on here?
