VPN does not recognize I'm at the coffee shop

My computer announces to me, when I'm at the coffee shop, that Norton Security and Norton VPN should be "enabled". The Norton flags pop up to let me know my connection is not secure. There is no 'on' or 'activate' icon; I'm on my own, on a public network, with the idea that Norton could protect my privacy but, will not!

Furthermore, this page has no way to add a screenshot so that others with the same lack of security could add their experience with this product.

Oh! Wait, maybe I should call Norton at 6:08 a.m on Wednesday morning, from the coffee shop and ask a stranger to sign on to my computer and fix it.

Well SoulAsylum and others who may have the problem,

The attached screenshots show that when I come to the coffee shop I'm not protected.

Clicking the 'enable' button still does nothing to mask my location, clicking the 'enable' button does nothing.

Today I left my computer on while I traversed the few blocks to get coffee hoping that Norton would seek the wi-fi and protec my computer and my location.

Oh, cool! You've solved the problem of looking at screenshots by disallowing screenshots:

Files must be less than 128 MB.
Allowed file types: txt pdf zip. Screen Shot 2019-11-05 at 8.23.56 AM   Screen Shot 2019-11-05 at 8.25.19 AM

You're welcome. The same should apply on Apple products as well. The built in VPN cannot be set to start when the computer starts or has rebooted. ONLY the services that are required will start, NOT the actual VPN. The same protection scenario applies to MAC and Windows. Your Norton A/V product is protecting you, once the VPN is manually started its added protection in masking your IP will begin. Hope that helps.

Cheers

Thank you SoulAsylum,

I forgot to mention that the computer is a MacBook Air (which I bought to communicate with my kids) not a Windows computer. Please understand that I'm sort of Mac-averse, thus when I take steps such as those you mention and nothing changes I think it's the Mac or some glitch which doesn't allow Norton to protect Mac like a regular computer.

Hello chasman2. There is no lack of security. Your Norton product has the below features that are protecting your wifi connections although the VPN has not been started to "mask" your true IP address and location:

wifi security.pngIn your second screenshot clicking the "enable" button the slider below it will show as the VPN being on and active. Its NOT telling you that your Norton product isn't protecting you. Refer to the above screenshot.

There is no way for the VPN to automatically start with Windows with a N360 product installed. The "standalone" VPN can be set to auto-start with Windows conversely.
