Vulnerability Protection blocking .RAR/.ZIP/.exe/MSI files?

Hi,

I'm having issues downloading files when vulnerability protection is on. It has only started recently and I've pretty much uninstalled a lot of software trying to find out what it was!

Files like these only around 4kb downloads - zip, rar, exe, msi are the ones I've seen so far.

Anyone know why this is happening? The files I'm downloading are perfectly safe..

Hello,

I'm still having these issues downloading .RAR files, despite the updates. I have all the Vulnerability protection signatures up to date, but I'm still unable to download .RARs without disabling vulnerability protection in general (since I have no idea what specifically is causing this.) Is there any other way to fix this? It's becoming more and more inconvenient.

Which version of Norton Internet Security/Norton AntiVirus do you have installed? I tested our fix on Norton Internet Security 5/Norton AntiVirus 12, but did not test Norton Internet Security 4. As far as I know this issue didn't affect that version.

I just downloaded http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlng.rar and it came down fine. Do you have a specific link that doesn't work?

Last, try restarting your Mac. That shouldn't affect anything, but who knows.

Hi,

I think I am on AV 4, (I bought it in June) so I'm not sure.

I'm still having the same issue - Last update was 20th Oct, I believe it is that update that has caused my downloads to mess up.

Is there nothing else I can do?

It says I'm using version 11.1.2 (17) of Norton Antivirus. I've tried restarting, it did nothing. And the problem applies to literally every .rar file I try to download, no matter where it comes from.

Apparently this issue does apply to NAV 11.x (NIS 4.x) after all.  We are working on a fix.

I am having this issue with NAV 11 and .exe. files.

I created a new topic before I saw this thread, sorry...

Hello Timothy, Tunechii, and tincansamurai,

Thanks everyone for your postings and patients. Timothy, no problem with the "new" topic you created. I'll note a reference back to this thread and we'll continue on with this one.

As Lee stated we are working to resolve this.

It would be helpful if each of you could please reply with some example URLs from which you are attempting and failing to download files. This way we're more certain to experience what each of you is seeing.

I'd like to ask all of you to run LiveUpdate and execute the Update Everything Now option. In this way we'll all be working with the latest versions and definitions. The Vulnerability Protection signatures should be dated 10/20/11 and NIS 4.1.1 component versions with contain Vulnerability Protection feature are as follows: NAV 11.1.2, and NFW 4.1.1. These version numbers/dates can be found by doing the following...

Vulnerability Protection signatures date:

1. Launch NAV and select the Automatic Protection tab.

2. Authenticate and select the Vulnerability Protection "configure" button.

3. Midway down the resulting sheet (below the Signatures list) you'll see "Signatures date:"

4. Again, the date we currently want to see here is 10/20/11.

Norton AntiVirus version number:

1. Launch NAV

2. Select Norton AntiVirus menu located at Finder's menu bar.

3. Select About Norton AntiVirus from the drop down menu.

4. The About Norton AntiVirus window will open.

5. "Version 11.1.2" should be displayed within this window.

Norton Firewall version number:

1. Launch NFW

2. Select Norton Firewall menu located at Finder's menu bar.

3. Select About Norton Firewall from the drop down menu.

4. The About Norton Firewall window will open.

5. "Version 4.1.1" should be displayed within this window.

Thank you and please stay tuned.

David

My initial experience were from very small shareware developers and I am reluctant to post the links as I don't want them to be overwhelmed with excess bandwidth demands.

However, I have tested random .exe downloads from www.tucows.com/windows as well as Adobe.com and they consistently fail.

Although it is important to note that it does not just occur with sites that use automated redirects to initiate a download. Direct links to .exes also fail.

This started happening to me in the last week. Any .rar file I try to download, I only (near instantly) get a completed (incomplete) 4kb download.

I have since this started been able to download big .avi, zip, mp3 and mp4 files.

MAC os 10.4.11

Safari 4.1

Camino 2.0.9

FireFox 3.6.23

UPDATE:

We have been able to replicate the issue in NIS 4/NAV 11 and have a solution.

However, at this time we're unable to commit to exactly when the solution will be available.

We will do so ASAP.

Thank you for your help and patients.

Hi,

I'm also having the same issue as everyone here.

Today is 11/19/11 - please update the status in resolving this.

Thanks.

I had trouble downloading the GMER exe earlier this week. http://www.gmer.net/ I also had trouble downloading numerous rar files to my MAC. I am running Symantec 11, and will get the exact version number for you when I get home, as well as a link to a rar file that I can’t download. If possible, I can even see if I can upload the attachments via my windows machine to this site.

Hello all,

Just a post to let you know we've not forgotten you.

Again, we do have a fix. Unfortunately we are still unable to commit on exactly when the solution will be available.

We will do so ASAP.

Thank you for your help and patients.

David

Just adding to the list.  I have two Macintosh computers with brand new Norton Internet Security for Mac installed this week.

Imac with OS 10.5.8, 2.66 GH Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM

MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8, 2.3 GHz Intel Core I7 with 8GB RAM

I verified all of the dates and versions previously posted.

Rar files start to download for a split second and stop with no data.  I use unRarX 2.2 to uncompress.

This problem did not occur prior to installation of Norton Internet Security for Mac.  I love the product and look forward to a fix.

Vulnerability Protection seems to have received an update as of 12/2/2011.

Unfortunately, the issue still remains.

Yes the issue has not been fixed. Most of the staff was out on vacation for Thanksgiving and has not had time to fix the problem. We're still looking into it.

Unfortunately the timing was bad on this issue. We were in the middle of optimizing the definitions for NIS 5, which will hopefully make the product faster. Unfortunately that process had already started when we discoverd this issue so we had no choice but to continue, and try to fix this issue while also optimizing the signatures. It made both things go more slowly than normal, but we hope to have both changes done next week or the week after.

Thanks for the update Ryan.
