We are a small software developer who are loosing business due to WS.Reputation.1

Hi,

I run a small software business - we sell shareware online. We have had a number of potential customers state that Norton Antivirus removes the installer from there PCs as the "Reputation" of the product - according to Norton - warrants it being deleted from their system!

So - not only are we loosing business becasue your software is reporting false positives, we have also lost money marketing the product to this potential customer and our companies reputation takes a battering.

The installer is signed and contains no viruses. We've been selling the product for over 5 years and we have many, many happy customers. Its reputation is perfectly fine - thank you very much.

I have submitted a whitelist reuest with you for the software. However, it looks as though I need to submit a new request everytime we update the software - which is quite often.

This is not acceptable. This feature in Antivirus is badly concevied and damages small software vendors.

I need a more stable long term solution to the problem.

The norton is the best antivirus.

What kind of reply is that?

So - no help then.

Looks like were just going to continue to loose business does it?

How many other small developers are suffering from this issue?

Class action lawsuit in the making.

I'm sorry no-one with experience came in on this.

Hang on while I shout for some help ....

Hugh,

I have already PM'd Console_Ops requesting their assistance on this thread.

Thanks -- I knew someone knew the right thing to do ....

Are you in a position to digitally sign your binaries. This could help mitigate the risk of false positives occurring.

I'll jump in here.

For a small developer who might have 2-3 products and might release 3-4 times a year, adding this manual task every time there is a version change is a recipe for failure.

I have even a bigger problem. We provide our software under multiple brands to 3rd party customers.  The same application with UI and content modification is packed and buit for each. In total, we have about 2,000 installers. With two releases annualy  that will be 4,000 new installers. In other words,  manulay whitlisitng all is not an option. All installerss are digitally signed, so providing a company/certificate based whiltlisting which is based on company / signature and requires maybe one renewal a year for all products sounds line a workable solution.

As it is today, we are loosing customers everyday thanks to those false positive warnings.

Conor, et al.

We too are a small developer dealing with the very same issue.  We are in a position to digitally sign, but still our "reputation", per Norton, prevents Norton users from downloading our application unless they turn off Norton.

I look forward to hearing from the experts on this matter.
