What is the difference

What is the difference between (Norton internet security and Norton internet security Netbook edition? I purchased the Netbook edition for a new netbook and it gives me for 3 PC's.  So I downloaded the Norton internet security version for my Laptop computer and it does not like the product key.

Sorry tom724:

They are considered to be different products.  You can not use the key for the netbook edition on NIS.  You also can't use the NIS key on the netbook edition.

Could not get a answer as to the difference from support.. I have a desktop, a laptop, and a netbook. The netbook came with Norton internet security netbook edition so I purchased and it came  with good for 3 PC's. Support said that I need to download the netbook edition for my other PC's for the key to work but they could not satisfy me that they were the same. ((My thoughts are if they were the same, why would they have two different downloads.))  I would not put a netbook edition on my Laptop or desktop PC so I am dumping Norton, asked for a refund, and going back to AVAST and ZoneAlarm. I left Norton years ago when Norton became a resource hog but was ready to give them another try.

Hello tom724

You can put the regular NIS 2010 on the laptop and netbook. You can get a refund for the netbook edition that you bought and get instead the regular NIS 2010 for 3 computers. I think there is only a couple of things that won't work on the netbook.

You can either use up the time of the trial version on the netbook or uninstall the trial version and then use the regular NIS 2010 on it. If you want to try this route, please let us know and we can give you instructions on how to do this. Thanks.

Hi Tom724

Sorry for ur experience with support.

Since you have already purchased a key which is good for 3 PCs ,  why dont you install Netbook edition on your laptop and  desktop too. Netbook edition has nothing short of the normal edition. All features are the same. Just that the features are optimized for netbook. From http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security/netbook-edition i see that Netbook edition has the following optimizations:

Optimized for Netbook PCs

  • IMPROVED! Proven fastest, lightest netbook security suite for protection that won’t slow you down, get in your way, or swallow up netbook memory and resources.*
  • Netbook Mode extends battery life by putting off non-critical tasks until your netbook is plugged in.
  • Optimized for netbook displays with 800 x 480 support and 1024 x 576 screen handling.

This optimization is not available in the normal editions.

In your netbook, with NIS Netbook edition installed, go to Settings -> Miscellaneous settings, you will find a "netbook mode" option. This is ON by default. It saves your battery power by suspending a list of background jobs when your computer runs on battery power (See Help of this feature for more information). I would recommend that you install the netbook edition on both your laptop and desktop. Keep the 'netbook mode' ON in your laptop (since laptops also run on battery sometimes) and turn it off in your desktop so that it functions like a normal product in your desktop.

Hope this helps !

Thanks

Hi Tom724,

There have been requests to Symantec to make the product keys between the Netbook and regular editions be made compatible.

We don't know if this is something that will be done and if so when.

In the meantime both suggestions made by Floplot and N_sb_combatant could be viable solutions for you.

Hi tom724,

You can also go to this link to see which differences exist between NIS and NIS Netbook Edition:

http://www.symantec-norton.com/Norton_Internet_Security_2010_-_Netbook_Edition_p71.aspx#netbookeditiondifferences

Thank you for all of the responses. When I can use the same key for either version, I will take another look at it.
