Our society is one where we all tend to want what other's have and we don't. We want what is popular, what the current fad is.
So what about hackers and cyber criminals? They are people to. What is the current fad amongst them?
I have noticed that certain types of cyber threats have varied in popularity among them overtime. First in the '90s everyone was worried that their computer would catch a virus. Then at the turn of the millennium the threat of worms started to rise. Soon after identity theft became more and more common and so spyware and later phishing scams began to freak people out.
The point is that hackers are constantly developing new forms or cyber threats every day. Security companies, like norton, do their best to try and keep up with them by developing new technologies to stop them. Things like firewalls, phishing filters, etc have become necessities to protect our computers. Some threats are almost non-existant thanks to these types of new security measures. We do of course have the occasional sudden outbreak as I am sure we all still remember conficker.
I for one find it interesting how hackers tend to change what type of threat they favor using. Just looking at the forums now I would say the current fad is malware and rootkits. I also feel that cross-scripting attacks are one of the newer threats currently on the rise simply because so many companies are taking measures to prevent them.
Anyone else care to point out what threats they feel are currently on the rise and how norton is currently preventing them with their security progams? Or better yet, how norton could be better preventing them. What do you think is currently the fad among hackers?
