Hi bcrown,
Pifcrawl.exe is part of the LiveUpdate Notice component of a number of our products, including Norton AntiVirus 2008.
There is some information about LiveUpdate Notice available here: What is LiveUpdate Notice?
LiveUpdate Notice does have a separate uninstaller that I believe that you could use to remove just this component in "Add or Remove Programs" in the control panel. Removing it will mean that you will not get any notifications from Symantec should new versions etc become available (but it will not stop LiveUpdate from updating your virus definitions etc).
If would prefer to keep it installed, it would probably be a good idea to contact our customer service team so that they can try to identify the cause of the conflict. You can reach them either through the "Help and Support" area of Norton Antivirus or via this link: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

JamesB,
Thanks you for the information. If I understand this information correctly, my problem is being caused by a notification system installed by Symantec. While I can disable it, every time I run Live Update, it will insist on installing it unless I opt out each and every time.
. Following is from the information page:
"Am I required to install LiveUpdate Notice?
You have the option to reject installation of LiveUpdate Notice. An invitation to install LiveUpdate Notice will appear every time LiveUpdate runs until LiveUpdate Notice is downloaded and installed. If you decide not to install the LiveUpdate Notice service during a LiveUpdate session, an option to download and install LiveUpdate Notice will appear during your next LiveUpdate session. With online threats constantly changing, we recommend that you keep your Norton products up to date with the latest features and technologies available to maximize your online protection. Installing LiveUpdate Notice is an important step that will help you your Norton product up to date."
In other words, a program I did not ask for is causing me a problem and Symantec is insisting that I reject the installation of the program every time I try to update my purchased programs.
No wonder people think that the company can be pushy!
Is there no way to turn off the option of installing this unnecessary program?

Thanks -- I've always wondered what that was and never got round to asking since the Forums opened here <g>
Perhaps there is an alternative solution? Like, if the notice comes from the alternative firewall you are using then putting the "offending" file into the whitelist?
You aren't running both firewalls are you?
Actually, After I sent the last message, I have found that the Live Update Notice is a service under XP. I have set the service to disabled and that seems to solve the problem (for now). Next I will try and white list the file with my firewall.
It is just aggravating to have so many programs which won't play nice with each other. Why can't we all just get along
[edit: fixed minor formating issue.]
Thanks for the update -- let us know how it goes.
I prefer to have notices rather than full automatic update -- I just had a situation with N360 on a different system and I was restoring an OS partition used for testing when LUD popped up and said it was about to reboot to finish installing an update.
It took me a moment or two to react and the darn thing went off and rebooted before I could hit Cancel ! Fortunately the restore had in fact completed in the background (it was on another drive) but it reminded me to be very careful on multi-boot machines!
y’all really should have thought of a better name. Imagine looking in your process list cause things are already running slowly and you know there is one particular program you have to end the process on until you can take the time to have it suitably updated and you see pifCrawl.exe in the middle of it all. I grew up in the DOS generation, anything saying pif you get a little weary of as those are programs and files that are usualy the first to get attack when viruses happen and then the word crawl…I’m thinking ok, puter is running usually slow and heres something that literal translation of the name in my brain means ‘file crawl’ and of course I nearly freaked. then I did a search on it and its norton. d…i…d n…o…t c…o…m…p…u…t…e. maybe next time y’all should remember that a couple of us dinosaurs are still out here and put a disclaimer on there with big friendly letters that say “don’t panic” anyway, thats my 3 cents worth.
