What on earth?! 9 "files affected" messages; 33/34 infection files

What on EARTH happened?!

I returned to my laptop, which I'd inadvertently left logged on to the Internet during the workday and it went to sleep for 8+ hours, powered-up and all HECK broke loose.  What appears to be the Windows security screener identified for me, repeatedly and with pop-up windows all over the place, "files affected" warnings with the following files identified as affected by security threats.  Ultimately I received a list of malware programs, key logger, trojans, adware, worms, and virus's as follows.  Finally there was a flashinig of little icons all over the place and I was never able to even locate, much less access my Norton Internet Security program to attempt a security screening of my machine.  It was as if Norton had disappeared; the icon wouldn't work and my start/programs list failed to respond.

Finally, terrified that I'd murdered it, I was able, with much finger "english," to "Start," "Turn off" and shut it down.  Egads!  What on earth happened?!?!  Then I just went to sleep for the night!

I did finally run a Norton full security scan this evening and came up with only 1 offending trojan (if my memory serves me correctly), which Norton managed quite adequately.  It wasn't even on the list I came up with last night.

I've attached a list of the offensive and offended files I made from the message windows and "Live Update" results window to illustrate the problem.  I am using a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP ver. 5.1 and Norton Internet Security.  Can you folks help me figure out what happened?  What an unbelievably terrifying experience!!!  I expected my machine to begin smoking at any moment :smileysurprised:.

TIA,

Linda
