What ports need to be opened to communicate on home network with NIS 2008?

I have just set up a home network.  The setup follows:

     Desktop (host) runs Win XP

Laptop runs Vista (this is where all the headaches come from)

     A wireless router (linksys)

     A Dell AIO printer.

I have been working, none stop, for 3 weeks trying to get my network printer to communicate thru the desktop to the laptop.  I have: read a thousand (this is NO exageration) of forums, written to Dell, chatted with both Sony & Cisco and posted to 3 different user communities. I have not found a solution that worked for me.  The very sad truth, this is a very COMMON problem with these two Microsoft products!  Finally, 3 days ago I put on a new AIO printer with a wireless hookup and was able to print in 15 minutes.  I am not a person to just give up but just couldn't figure what could be wrong!!!!  Obviously, neither could the "experts".  Luckily I didn't have to pay for the support yet.

Compared to that problem this question should be relatively easy.  On the XP machine there are alot of ports opened.  Can anyone tell me what ports need to be there for the home network equipment listed above?  I just want to be sure my machine is secure, without spending my lifetime figuring it out.   I had a dialup connection that I disabled when I got a cable modem.  I can figure out the program calls but I haven't seen a list of port numbers.  This help system leaves ALOT TO BE DESIRED.  This is the single most important software you buy!

I also remember reading about a security problem with Linksys routers.  I thought I bookmarked it for later but I bookmarked 50 entries.  Anyone know where I might find the fix for this?  Thank you all in advance!!!

Thank you for answering me so quickly.  Sorry if I didn't explain myself.  I added the wireless printer and everything with that is great.  I tried everything the "experts" suggested but there is no way I could get the old printer to work.  Basically, the new printer came with the wireless adapter so I gave up and put that on.

Right now, because of all the new equipment and the changes I tried I want to check that NIS firewall is set up without unneeded ports being opened.  I tried so many suggestions to get  file and printer sharing there are approx. 10 ports opened but they just have a number.  I also had a dialup connection setup that I don't want anymore.  Now I just need to know what all these ports do (is there a list out there somewhere?).

Also, if anyone knows about security for the wireless router...  I read somewhere there may be an issue with the security of the Linksys model I purchased.  It was very late when I read it but I believe it was an issue with WPA.  Right now I added mac addresses for all equipment to make that more secure.

I had problems trying to setup print sharing between win xp and win vista on a new network.

Desktop (host) runs Win XP

Laptop runs Vista (this is where all the headaches come from)

A wireless router (linksys)

A Dell AIO printer.

The printer was attached to the desktop and I tried to print through the wireless router.

(I have another message opened (reference http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=32200 )).

I tried all the suggested "solutions"  to print through the host but nothing worked.  Finally I put a new printer with a wireless print adapter and can print from either computer.  I had it setup in minutes!!!

I made a lot of changes during the 3 weeks of trial and error.  Which leads me to my current problem...

When I look at the NETWORK SECURITY MAP there are 3 networks listed under NETWORK DETAILS

1.) The wireless router network.  This has all 4 devices listed and all seems well.

2.) The LAN connection *11.  This only shows my laptop.  THE LAPTOP SHOWS A DIFFERENT IP ADDRESS than #1.

3.)  Trusted.  This only shows the Desktop host with a physical address.

The result seems to be A LOT OF SECURITY RISKS.  When I look at the laptop log (win vista)  I see the following messages repeated many times

"IP ADDRESS HAS DISAPPEARED FROM ADAPTER TEREDO TUNNELING PSEUDO-INTERFACE AND IS NO LONGER BEING PROTECTED."  It gives the address of the laptop in the LAN network.  It then repeats this message and gives the second address for the same laptop in the LAN network.

A few minutes later there is another message

"PROTECTING YOUR CONNECTION TO A NEWLY DETECTED NETWORK IN ADAPTER "INTEL (r) WIRELESS WIFI LINK... with the address in the wireless router network setup.  The desktop is not on during all of this so it is not an issue of something switching on.

ON THE HOST COMPUTER

I am getting a lot of issues this is just an example of one

RULE "DEFAULT BLOCK EPMAP BLOCKED (ip address of laptop from wireless setup) PORT DCOM(135)).  INBOUND TCP CONNECTION.  DETECTED LOCAL ADDRESS, SERVICE IS (ip address of host from wireless setup), PORT DCOM(135)).  REMOTE ADDRESS, SERVICE IS (laptop ip) PORT (50350) PROCESS NAME IS "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SVCHOST.EXE".

Can anyone help me decipher?  I have read the Norton Help but there is no listing of error codes and I haven't found anything under the support online.  I am counting on you!!!  If you need anymore info, please let me know.  Thank you in advance!!!!!!

Hi sako100,

I  have replied to another one of your posts

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=32642

In that other post I asked which Norton product you have and if you have ever run a full system scan with the latest defs.

It is important to know this in order to rule out a virus as the root cause of the different problems that you  have reported.

Again, let me know the product version. Then run LiveUpdate until no other updates are available and then disconnect from the Internat and run a full system scan.

Post the results.

Thanks,

Hi,

Setting your wireless network connection to SHARED via the network map should allow the printer sharing to work.

Thanks,
