What’s the cost of renewing my subscription?

What’s the cost of renewing my subscription?

I have a few days left on my subscription to Norton Anti-Virus 2009 and I was wondering what the cost would be for renewing my subscription for another year.

Would it be better for me to buy NAV2010 instead?

Thanks.

Hi Kimmy,

I am located in the US and personally, I get my NIS product keys every year for free (technically) when stores advertise them as being free after a series of mail in rebates. It usually says something like (for NIS at least) $69.00 - $10 instant savings - $40 mail-in rebate (marketed as being through store but comes in the form of a pre-paid visa card with "Norton" written on it) - $20 upgrader's mail-in rebate through symantec (only works if you have purchased the same norton product in the last 4 years and also comes in the form of a "Norton" pre-paid visa card). Stores usually advertise deals like that at least once ever other month and for sure every Black Friday (that is when I usually buy mine). If your keep your eyes open you can get any one of the three main norton products (NIS, NAV, and 360) for free through deals like that.

Of course, if you don't want to go that route you could also automatically renew online. However, symantec only gives you a small discount as seen here. IMO, it is always best to go with buying your norton software in a store for the savings alone (it is also nice getting the physical cd).

If you decide to wait until you find NAV2010 for free in the store, your current subscription does run the risk of running out before than. To prevent this, the day your subscription runs out uninstall NAV2009 via add/remove programs. From there, run the norton removal tool (available here) once or twice (this is a good idea whenever you upgrade a norton product due to reported problems with traditional upgrades), and then install the 30 day trial of NAV2010 via this link. Once you have purchased your copy of NAV2010 you can then simply type in your new product key.

Hope this helps!

Pexley

Thanks Pexley,

I’m in the UK.  I’ve never seen offers like that.  I’ve always had to pay full price for NAV.  Last year I bought NAV2009 online for the first time.  I’m sorry I did now.  I do miss having the physical CD in my hand.  There’s something reassuring about having the CD just in case something goes wrong.

I still have 67 days left of my subscription.  So it’s early days yet.

I don’t understand how I can download NAV2010 for free.  As I understand it, it’s a beta version and it installs over the top of my installed NAV2009.  What happens if the upgrade goes wrong? (and it probably will knowing me),  I don’t have a NAV2009 CD to recover from.

If I upgrade now to NAV2010 and install it over the top of NAV2009, what will I have to pay in 67 days time?

I’m easily confused.  Sorry.

The beta finished a while ago. Whatever you upgrade to will be the official version

You can download NAV2010 from here and then burn to a CD.

Whatever the online price is or, if you can get the boxed version cheaper elsewhere, then buy it and just use the activation key to extend your subscription.

I’m easily confused.  Sorry.

If you have Product Key 1234 and you have 067 Days of Subscription Remaining and you enter Product Key 5678, you will lose the 067 Days, so I'd recommend waiting until about Two Days of Subscription Remaining before entering that New Product Key.

Kimmy,

Although it's quite a few years now since I lived in the UK I can assure you both from online research and from messages posted here that you should be able to buy a retail box of NIS 2009 or 2010 at a rebated price from the major computer stores and on line from the specialized mail order computer software and equipement outfits.

Norton can't upset their retail outlets by naming specifics here but if you are a dab hand at internet searching I'm sure you will find some that are reputable but don't buy from individuals on places like eBay, it's too risky in my opinion. Google is your friend but be careful of the source and nature of the product. Check out the flyers the stores put out and with 2010 being launched you may find it on sale too, or 2009 if they still have stock.

Be careful not to buy an OEM version since those may not rate for the free upgrade to NIS 2010 and be careful to buy the 3PC version if that is what you want but you should be able to save money.

NOTE that with the KEY from a 2009 version you do not have to install it and upgrade it -- you can download the NIS 2010 version as indicated in other messages and install it. Then activate it just by typing in the 2009 Key!

Hugh,

I've seen a few users - not sure if this was user error - losing their Identity Safe Profile when Upgrading from N.I.S. 2009 > N.I.S. 2010, which is why I would suggest using the "Custom Uninstall" in order to Save the Profile, although you could back-up to a C.D. or to a secure device; but I agree that you should have no problem Upgrading using the Norton 2010 Installer.  Your Previous Product Key should be Detected automatically.

I was more concerned with the question of getting the KEY than with installing or updating .....

I lost all my antispam settings when I went from 2008 to 2009 not knowing that they needed to be saved.

Give Ebay a try , they have legit copies boxed etc, they work 100%  !!!  :smileywink:

I'd avoid doing this because, even though they may be legitmate copies, someone could already have used the Product Key, so you could actually be paying £49.99/$49.99 for a Product Key which hasn't got any Days of Subscription Remaining, which is why I'd always recommend the symantec Web Site and/or a well-known computer shop, such as P.C. World.

Sorry to disagree but i have bought copies from ebay  genuine retail boxed and  still sealed for far less than pc world etc and they activated and lasted the full duration. You just need to choose a reputable shop on there and know what to look for.
